Default Anti-rattle clamp for Hilux towbar - do you think it works?

A friend is complaining that his Hilux towbar wobbles or rattles with a load of bicycles. The square tube is loose inside the receiver. He says there was a knurled knob underneath which could be tightened and helped a bit, but that fell out. Now he is asking me to copy this thing for him. . . . .

Have any of you guys tried this? Where did you get it? (doesn't appear to be common in SA but very popular in USA)

Looks simple enough to fabricate. I had same issue on Ecosport towbar and replaced the knurled pinch nut with a normal HT hex bolt. After nipping it up with a spring washer I never had the loose rattle issue again

Toyota recalled the Hiluxes about a year or two ago to fix this issue. Only on tow bars fitted by Toyota.
On my vehicle they put a spacer into the square gap where the ball fitting goes in.
Not a very elegant solution as it is now very difficult to get the ball fitting out.

The knurled knob on my original factory fitted Hilux towbar is situated on top so that it is not easy to fall off. Not underneath.

Like Battlestar said, It seems easy enough to just use a normal hexagonal bolt in the place of the knurled knob (if it is lost) to stop the rattling.

OK, I see now that the two tow bars look a bit different. I think mine was the older version.

His very late model towbar arrangement is like this:

The main towbar across the chassis is a massive square tube tipped over a few degrees. the tow ball square tube that slides in there is very short - its tip is slanted and so it can only be installed with knurled screw pointing down. I guess that short engagement is part of the bike rack wobble problem. Whole thing made by Bosal.

Mostly made from laser cut plates and the tow ball square tube measures 54 x 54 mm - just too big for a standard 2inch or 50mm U-Bolt. The bumper comes down close onto all of this and so there is little space for a clamp. And the screw will be in the way of a clamp, unless it is just discarded.

Have developed this clamp with ITrekz:

A bit of S.African overkill compared to the Chinese imports. The U-Bolt is 12mm grade 8.8 compared to the 10 mm ones that have a reputation for snapping. The bottom plate is 12mm in the photo, should have been 10mm, that was my oops. The overseas ones are typically 8mm. The big notch goes around the knurled screw of the Hilux, but this clamp will also work for Jeeps or any other with the 2 inch removable square tube tow hitch. (standard 2 inch rattle clamps will not work for HiLux because it is slightly bigger than 2 inches - 54mm)

This clamp can be installed in a variety of ways. Here it is on a popular after-market bumper where there is 2mm play between their square tube and receiver:

Wrapped my square tube in duct tape. Worked perfectly haha.

Very nice how does one go about purchasing one as I have a removable tow bar on an old shape prado that has far too much play and am hoping this will sort the problem out.

    Thank
