Now see Fortuner and the Amarok - Centre Difflock = yes.

Have they not got pretty much the same setup?

The previous gen Tuner was full time 4 x4

So is the Amarok

But that Fortuner does not have a center diff, so it cannot claim a diff lock

As far as i understand when you change from 2H to 4H then the center diff is engaged to share power from back to front equally for driving on dirt road for better tracktion.. 4L from there then etc.
When you back to tar 2H it is dis- engaged

There is no center diff in a part time 4x4, The transfer case connects the two axles directly. That is why you get windup on hard surfaces with a part time 4x4 that is in 4x4 (Low or Hi)

Rather the option should be marked not applicable by the owners of part time 4x4 system

The LRs and the H3 are full time 4x4. The centre diff acts the same as it does on an axel except it allows different rotation between front and rear as opposed to left and right. I can lock this in 4L. But it is also subject to wind up.

The confusion is arising from the term diff as opposed to a coupling, which a number of new vehicles have, like some of the modern bakkies which are rear wheel driven. When 4x4 is engaged, the coupling ''locks'' front and rear prop shafts but dont have the ability to slip, hence the wind up. It, therefore, is not a diff (allowing for differential rotational speeds between front and rear)

However, to compound the issue, there are viscous couplings used on some AWD vehicles. This allows the vehicle to be in 2 wheel drive but automatically ''locks'' front to rear when traction decreases or, it can be locked manually. The Jeep Patriot has such a system.

In short, a CDL will allow slip front and rear if not locked whereas a ''coupling'' will not and is purely a means to lock front and rear. Such vehicles, like the Amarok, do not have a CDL in the true sense, but they have a coupling that will lock F to R when selected.
