WK Battery Longevity

How long does the battery in the WK last on average (3.0CRD)?

Find I am replacing them every 2 years. No electronic mods on vehicle. Even with an intelligent charger/maintenance charger they still not lasting longer.

Las 2 batteries were the Willard 658

I have the 5.7 and only needed to replace the battery once in the pas 4 years.

My battery died due to something on the 12V auxiliary rail drawing power when the Jeep was off. Not much but coupled with short city trips resulted in it never fully charging.

My rear heated seats also draw a miniscule amount for some reason. So I have pulled the fuse for that.

WOW, that is a short life-span. I would replace with another brand like VARTA. they make excellent batteries. Also make 100% sure that the battery meet the specs required by your vehicle. (AH and CCA)

Check the charge voltage.
Anything over 14.4V is bad.

According to the specs on the Willard 658 on the battery it is a 12V ClassA, Cn 90Ah and SAE CCA: 630A (this battery and previous was recommended and installed by the 'Jeep Specialist' I usually take Jeep to for servicing)

Charge Voltage is good (around 14.3 to 14.4 regularly),

Any idea where I can get a Varta? (Randburg area). No one seems to stock them from the usual suspects.

Interesting, I found that the original batteries are genuine good. The one in my 5.7 Hemi lasted 8 years the one in the CRD JK 2012 model is still working fine. Howeverthe OME batteries are expensive 7k or thereabouts.

Admittedly 7k is a bit out of my budget at the moment , but that is good longevity for OEM.

My experience with my CRD WK is that the batteries last about two years. I think it the CRD engine compartment is a fairly hot place which impacts on the battery life.

Had a Varta battery (fairly expensive) with a 24 month warranty. Died on 26 months.

Replaced it with a Willard (much cheaper) with a 24 month warranty. Died on 22 months. Got a free replacement which died after about 2 years as well. Good value for money in the end.

Replaced it with a Sabat (cheapest). Currently on 25 months and still OK (been driving less during Covid).

Personally, I will go for the cheapest battery you can get with a 24 month warranty. If it dies before 24 months, you get another free one which should give about another 24 months...

Glad to hear that I am not the only one experiencing a dreaded '2 year cycle'

I drive a Mazda 2.5 TDI 2003 model, in its life to date it is now on third battery. I replaced the third one early last year. This gives me an average of about years on a battery. Ive checked the charge voltage about 14.5v never a starting ptoblem except when battery get tired after about 7-8 years. Cost of last battery about R1200.

That being said, all the batteries I have had only last 3 years tops. Although this latest one is going strong so far, it was the first one I managed to find a propero specced one. Can't recall brand now ,will check in the morning. Most shops sell you underspec batteries.

Yeah, been doing some googling and the OEM is 800 CCA and general consensus is the same (with some preferring to use 850CCA (AGM). Struggling to understand why the specialist mechie I took the car to when it was last replaced opted for a 630Amp Willard.

Battling to find a Varta and have sent a request off in respects of a Bosch S6587B, so will see what I come up with.

Hi there

I had issues with the Dixon battery I bought after the factory battery finally died. With the Dixon we often had starting problems and it leaked to the extent that the turbo hose had to be replaced, but fortunately the ECU and cables survived. Daniel from CCVS recommended a Varta and I have not had a days problem since.
