Question Your thoughts on 4x4: 2.4 Pajero Sport vs 2.4 Fortuner

Hi guys, Been lurking for years and got some great advice from the forum. I hope you can share some additional insight on my vehicle choice.

I am deciding between a 2017 Pajoro Sport 4x4 and a 2019 Fortuner 4x4. I love both but if the Pajero was a newer model I would have gone that route without a second thought.

    Fortuner Pros:
+ Still lots of Service Plan and warranty left
    + Low Kilos = 35k
+ Dealer is fitting brand new Tyres and replacing scratched side steps
    + Automark Approved
    + Resale Value

    Pajero Sport:
    + Lovely drive
+ Tip top condition with 70k on the clock
+ 4x4 System is great f rom what Ive read
+ Unique and I like the look
    - Warranty Expired
    - Tyres need to be replaced soon (20k or so thread left)
    - Not sure of the maintenance cost
    - Not sure about reliability

Basically have finance approval on both and have to decide ASAP. Your insight would be appreciated.

Stretch the budget and get new shape pajero sport. Its in another league.

Otherwise the 2019 tuna is a nicer car than the old sport. More refined. But the old pajero sport is no fuss bullet proof.

    Tough choice to have

Difficult choice. Newer but less power and torque or older and dont worry about power. Also see this thread.

Would love to go for the 2020 facelift but dont want to spend more than R450k.

I actually owned a 2017 Fortuner 2.4 4x4 which I bought new in 2017, was involved in a accident in December and written off. The 2019 Fortuner model has a improved head unit which was my only issue with the 2017 model.

But having driven the Pajero Sport it just felt more responsive and liked the look of it.

    Worried bout the PS:
    - Parts and maintenance costs
    - Will I break even if I trade it in 3 years from now? ( will be 7 years old then)

But thanks for the resonses, appreciated.

The sport should be quite a bit cheaper being a 2017 compared to the fortuner which is 2019
If the price is the same I have to say even being a mitsu fan the toyota is the right choice as you have some warranty still left and 2 years longer on service plan.
That said..The sport still has 1.5 years of service plan left and mitsu has always been good with big issues at fixing even after warranties..
If the sport is at least 70k cheaper than the fortuner I would go sport..otherwise fortuner

Pricing comparison on my 2 choices.

    2019 (November) Fortuner 2.4 4x4 with 35k = R460k
    - New tyres
    - 2 years warranty and service plan (6 services) left

    2017 Pajero Sport 2.4 4x4 with 70k = R430k
    - Needs new tyres soon
    - No Warranty but 2 services left on plan

2017 is the newer shape Pajero Sport with the 2.4 MIVEC and 8 speed auto. The same one that was facelifted in 2020 to include terrain selection modes.

OP the reliability of these two vehicles seems outstanding at this stage and at this stage the Pajero Sport seems to have carried over the tough and reliable mantra established by the brand. I have read of no major failures or common problems associated with either.

So based on that go with the car that tickles your fancy. If you go with the Pajero Sport then rest easy knowing that one of the best Mitsu specialists is on your door step (60km or so) in Alberton (Arnold Venter from Mitsi Tech Performance). You will not have a problem finding aftermarket parts, long range tanks, tuning, or servicing as long as he is around (there are actually a number of great specialists dotted around the country).

You will loose a bit buying the Pajero Sport because you will have to pay for services (about R4k at an independent for an average service), but you may be getting it cheaper so the trade off may be fair. Don't be too worried about the resale on the Pajero Sport its not at all bad, especially that newer shape. Remember they sell brand new for nearly 150K cheaper than the equivalent spec Fortuner so factor that into the 2nd hand value and a three year old Pajero Sport with 50k on will probably have lost the equivalent to a 3 year old Fortuner with 50k on. But to me R50k worse trade wont be a deal breaker when deciding on a vehicle.

    Cheers

Thats a really tough one.If the sport is the one standing at a honda dealer its been on the market a bit now..I recon offer 410k and see what happens..Then its a good deal..Mitsu were selling 2018 demo 4x2 for 399k in nove/dec still

The newer a vehicle the easier it sell if you want to sell again and if you do not drive much more than 10kilo's p/a then you services is paid for the next 6 years.

So based on this the Pajero Sport seems to actually have held its value better than the Toyota?

New 2019 2.4 GD6 4x4 went at around R600k and in two years and 35k km it lost over R140k. So an average of over R70k per year even with low mileage being done. Or R4k per 1000km driven in terms of value lost.

Comparatively, in 2017 the Pajero Sport cost R600k for the 4wd version. https://www.news24.com/wheels/offroa...in-sa-20170901
That means the Pajero lost R170k in three years at an average of <R60k per year. When the mileage is considered it cost the owner R2.42k per 1000km driven in terms of value lost.

Obviously I don't know what the dealers paid so there is some room there for errors. Let me know if I made any obvious errors.

    Perhaps simplistic, but worth consideration.

You are right: its the PS at Vereeniging Honda. Went through the car and it looked to be in allround excellent shape, paintwork looked 100% original and well cared for. If it was a 2018 I wouldnt have thought twice but with it being 4 years old I get penalised by 1% additional interest rate as well.

You guys have already given me additional points to consider which is what I was hoping for. Big thanks.

Only thing that buggs me about the PS is that I could hear the turbo when I was driving. Is this normal? From what I read the PS should be quiter than the Fortuner.

I am not a fan of toyota but in this case its a far better option , unless you can get the PS for around R400k, but then the same applies to the Fortuna perhaps the price is also negotiable?
If both are non negotiable then the 15months old Fortuna is a much better deal as its basically like new

I am going through the same decision now, and the one thing that I have come to realize is that if you want to be fair to both vehicles, you really have to compare the Pajero Sport to the 2.8 Fortuner. Compared to the 2.4 Fortuner the Pajero Sport is in another league in terms of luxury, comfort and drive.

So with that in mind, the wife and I went this morning to look at and drive a 2018 2.8 Fortuner and a 2019 Pajero Sport. In our opinion the Pajero Sport wins hands down in terms of comfort and practicality because:
    1. The 3rd row of seats in the back of the Fortuner is a really bad design. Even with the Pajero Sport losing some height in the load bay (because the seats fold into the floor) the boot is still more practical.
    2. The 8 speed gearbox in the Pajero is amazing. What a refined drive! And the suspension is much more comfortable than that of the Fortuner.
    3. The interior of the Pajero Sport is much nicer. I know this is subjective, but the brown leather and the cheap looking wood trim in the Fortuner does not work for me.
    4. The PS is actually slightly narrower and shorter than the Fortuner (a good thing for us), but it feels roomier and more spacious. Especially in the second row of seats.

On the way home, we were saying to each other that we are amazed that the PS does not sell better in South Africa. But I guess perception is reality and in South Africa Toyota has perception on their side. Still, I suspect the Pajero Sport is actually the better vehicle and better value for money.
    2017 Pajero Sport 4x4
...living the gift that is life!
