Default 4.5 Patrol - What to look for?

Kind of have half an eye on a 1999 4.5efi Nissan Patrol GRX manual with 180k km on.
Don't know these vehicles very well, anything specific one should look out for when checking it out?
Previous owner used it as holiday vehicle so does have some camping trips under it's belt.

    thanks

Apart from the usual, cooling system and diff lock.

Pretty much the only way to break that engine is to use it as a submarine or to let it overheat repeatedly.

Rear door might crack around the lock from the weight of the spare, but it shouldn't be a problem at that mileage unless somebody hung a very big wheel there. Can be fixed but like everything it costs money.

If it was really overloaded, the rear spring perches might bend and later even crack down at the bottom. If he has a steel bumper and dual spare wheel carrier and evidence of a big roof rack, may be worth checking for.

If there is rust, it will probably be around the gutters. But that was mainly the Y60.

    thanks for the above.
Is spares availability a pain or can you basically still get everything?

Pretty much what Peter said earlier.

    I'll also add the following:

The factory standard radiator has a plastic expansion tank at the top which is prone to crack with age.
    The fan can also crack.

Check both of these - and coolant pipes as mentioned earlier.

Some models around about that year came out with dud fuel pumps. If the vehicle is sluggish, just have the fuel pressure tested.

Finally, it's a heavy vehicle. Depending on how it was used, the clutch may nee to be replaced in about 50,000 kms. It may be an idea to have the engine and gear box mounts checked out and possible replaced at the same time.

I've never battled with spares. But I'm unsure as to the spare situation in Swakop. If there are ever issues, feel free to PM, or ask the friendly folk at patrol4x4.co.za.

    Enjoy.
