Summer rains, is this unusual or just a reset.

This...I use 2 apps and both are consistently wrong! Maybe the clever ones are on leave still!

I currently have 4 on my phone, Apple's Weather app, Weather Gods, Weather Bug and YR, oh yes and then also Lightning Alarm, since December maybe even November not one of them has a clew.

The vaal and Orange River systems are really filling up quickly.

I am expecting floods below the confluence of Orange and Vaal late January is the current rate of pouring into the bloemhof and Van der Kloof persists.

Bloemhof is 105 odd percent and Vander kloof is 92 percent with Gariep also well over 100 percent so there is a lot of water on the way to the Van der kloof.

Widespread reports of good rains in many areas of Southern Africa makes it seem almost abnormal.

Yet as a young lad, lets call it 40 years ago, I recall many summers where our swimming pool became one with the flooded back yard. That may not seem like much rain but I grew up on the KZN coast where there is no flat lands.

This new system on the way should start impacting us late next week. This is the second in as many weeks that will bring a fresh deluge stretching deep into SA:



So my question is is this normal after a longish dry period, what is the worst you guys with some miles on the clock can remember. If you have visuals please post.

I remember in the sixties ,rains would leave what is now Riverhorse valley[KZN durban Sea cowlake ]and the then non existant n2 area under water .As a large Lake. Peter Rd steel bridge would be under water for a couple of days.

Not a long time later late sixties /early seventies ,durban ,the sea rose up to west street ,destroying the beach front ,if memory serves me correctly the old aquarium was under water and Durban's wax museum that was right at the corner of the golden mile, was also destroyed with everything below it.

Then 1986/7 we know of umfolosi bridges washing away ,John Ross bridge washing away[second time] and umdloti bridge washing away together with serious damages and loss of lives. In my opinion i believe that these cycles are natural , It is just that some of us have short memories of past occurrences

I tend to believe that "global warming" and its replacement "climate change" is just something that the French came up with when they realized that they reached their maximum growth in industrialisation and feared that other nations with larger land mass may overtake them and their EU ally nations.

I tend to think that development design ie. large areas of development with hard covered surface areas, storm water systems that move water out of its natural catchment areas into the sea or or another catchment area are disturbing rainfall patterns . We are upsetting the water cycle.Nothing will come down if nothing goes up.

I see Inanda started to overflow. You will have to arrange a trip down the valley. Must be a spectacular sight.

Did a trip up and down rivers this past weekend. Rivers are higher than they have been in years. Nice to see.

Update on the river.
The level has stabilized since Monday morning at what I have heard is about 800 cumec. I have compared it to the level we had at 1000 cumec in 2011 and it is very similar.

We have not had any notifications of increasing levels yet, but the signs we are seeing indicates that this might not be over yet.

If it is below van der Kloof dam then the forecast is that it will be well over a 1000 cumecs in a weeks time.

We are between Veloorsdrif/Onseepkans and Goodhouse, about 500 km below Van der kloof I think.

1000 - 2500 is not yet problematic, I am just worried that it might not end there.

Rainfall at the coast was not that low, the rain just did not fall from Krakeel upwards into the catchment areas.

Amazing Grips, do you have a running total for your rainfall this season and, if so, how does it compare to an average rainfall season (in total)?

Rob the traditional rain season is February - March.

We are way above normal rainfall. My recorded average for the past 11 years is 494mm.
Season total to date 685mm
From Sept 2020 till Dec 2020 we are on 391mm. January 2021 to date 294mm.


203mm for November 2020 is a record for the past 11 years also December on 172
