Go to Midas or Autozone , I am sure they are cheaper .

Depends on the brand. R900 will get you a 6t or even 8t jack from Wurth. And they are steel framed instead of cast iron

Or for less than half that price you can get the same or better ton rating Mac Afric bottle jack from Adendorff’s.

So unless it is a well known reputable brand I think R900 is a bit expensive

Midas have a good good range of both hydraulic and mechanical at well less than R900.

I recently went to buy one (also for a Hilux) and was persuaded to get the mechanical one by Midas. Their reasoning is that if the oil leaks out of an hydraulic jack it is useless.
I'm no expert so bowed to their superior knowledge or good salesmanship

These cheap jacks tend to sag. Make sure to use thressels also.

one you may consider, from Midas, is called a 3-stage 4t jack. One of the stages is just a part at the top that you unscrew to take up gap before jacking, so I'd call it 2-srage really. The first time use was helping a guy at roadside on tar, rear wheel of LC with about 300kg in the bin, when his tyre deflated. It was quite nice because when vehicle is low like that we could get it beneath the axle. It coped with the load, but we added the mechanical jack for safety.

I treated myself to it for convenience with my NP200, nice because it starts quite short at 16cm and extends to 38cm. Price of this convenience about R780ish.

For those of us who buy a tool like a hydraulic jack for a once a year emergency Adendorffs can seldom be beat. Decent quality at good prices

please make sure the jack fits under the vehicle when the tyre is flat and still has enough travel to lift the vehicle high enough to be able to fit a fully inflated tyre!

Thanks so much yes I am going next week with my Hilux for a Demo at Adendorffs here in PE ..also Pic of the Trailer . The ones on their Web Page even up to 15 Tons capacity look like they can easily get under when Truck has puncture as specs show they are small ..The Worrying part is that all the Bottle jacks only jack up a short way though but everyone raves about them so the Demo will show me

Howzit Peter,

May I suggest that you go with something heavier eg: 8 Ton / 10Ton... Anything smaller will bug you. These things are not expensive, and Autozone amd Midas keep them...

Just make sure to also add a decent foot plate on which to place it when using... eg: 250mm x 250mm. I use 3x 15mm layers of plywood. Glue them together with Expidermix 372, then trim them square, and sand the edges. I add two pieces of solid wood 75mm75mm x 150mm as spacers between the top of the jack and the underside of the point of lifting. I also carry a small length of aluminium tubing which fits over the little lever. That extension with save you a lot of schelp!

Great choice , and far better that the scissor jacks and tiny bottle jacks the OM'S supply.

Bigger is better when it comes to a bottle jack capacity.

Just check clearance. I used to carry an old 20 ton truck jack with me but found it useless if you cannot fit it when you have a completely deflated tire.

i went for a mechanical bottle jack because i store it on its side under the seat.

they say hydraulic jacks tend to leak if stored on their side

A 3500 kg bakkie would have at the most have a 1000 kg (1 ton) footprint on a front wheel.
Thus my question: Why would one require a 10 ton jack or will the bakkie be carrying a 20 ton payload?
Quality bottle jacks do not leak when laid on their side thus storage is not a problem.

Correct a 4t or 6t will work just fine. Lower tonnage usually has lower clearance and less lift.

So by opting for the highest capacity jack that will fit you will score an additional few mm in lifting height. Something to consider?

For me it is also very versatile. 10t Works great on the farm for unhooking the 'waterkar' and other equipment.

I assisted a grader operator in the middle of nowhere to lift his grader again after it fell of his own jack.

3t: 190mm - 368mm
6t: 210mm - 407mm
10t: 220mm - 440mm
20t: 240mm - 525mm
