The 3 Provinces Unbeatable Trip with some Old Wheelers.
When:
5,6,7 February 2021
Where:
3 Provinces 4x4 Trails and adventures: Link > General Information
Only three hours’ drive from Gauteng, near the small town of Volksrust, lies a gem of mother nature that is well worth exploring. It’s a place that has been blessed with abundance. Waterfalls elegantly find their way to the streams below and black eagles soar in the skies above.
Why:
I haven’t been there in about 3 years and this trail is an absolute must once a year. With all the rain, trails often change. 3 Provinces with its vast views and splendour is an absolute Gem.
Who:
Anyone that wants to come and join, can come and share a fire with us.
If you are wanting to 4x4, please note that it will require a 4x4 with low range, reasonable ground clearance and proper tyres. Make sure you bring your recovery gear, compressor and good wit.
What: is the plan
We arrive on the 5th February, check in at the old reception house where Ronel and Herman will meet you. You then wander up the hill and set up camp or drive through the west side of the farm to the Log and Rock cabins. That night we will have a braai at the camp area and sit and meet new people if any or just catch up with old ones. Bring wood.
NB# When it rains and gets windy, it rains and gets windy properly. So have proper camping gear. Trailers welcome.
Next morning 6th February, we breakfast and meet at 08h00 am for the divers briefing at the camp. Then we do the main trail. Take along refreshments and something easy for lunch as we will stop along the way. This will take about 4 to 6 hours depending on no of vehicles and weather conditions. If it rains, it will be fun… trust me.
After the trail we head back to camp, open a cold one, or hot one depending on the weather, and prepare a feast for all. Braai, potjie, whatever you want around a big fire. I will make a legendary Potjie to share.
You do not have to camp the night before, so if you only want to arrive early on Saturday morning and join before the briefing, you may do so, then camp Saturday night. You do not have to do the trail if you just want to come and enjoy the view and braai.
Sunday 7th February: Early breakfast again if you haven’t overdone it the night before and If you are up to it, drivers briefing once again at 08h00. We will then depart and do 2 short trails after consultation with Herman on which is best.
This will either be: Bobbejaankrans- & Tierkloof trails, Tierkloof Extreme and or Walletjiestraat 4x4 Trail
After these 2 or 3 trails, we head back to camp, have a quick lunch, pack up and head home. Nobody is rushed, so if you want to stay over again, you may do so.
Accommodation:
There are numerous accommodation options available from Camping to Log cabins to Rock chalets all around the farm
Our 1st choice is below.
Camping: Rooibektiptol Campsite
This is where we will be camping
Camping:
There are 50 stands & space for +/- 70 persons – no electricity – You need to light a donkey for hot water (we provide wood)

Really tempted...... been a number of years since I did the trail and camping thing at 3 Provinces. It was one of those extreme weather weekends, nearly got blown away and it was pouring. Still had lots of fun tho.

Has there been maintenance done to the trail? I'm just concerned about your comment "Not a car damage trail" last year we went and the felt/bush has started to overgrow the path, therefore getting a lot of pin-striping. also the rains have washed the route, so where the main route used to take ~ 1/2 a day to complete, it took us the whole day. Taking the Tunnel back was an interesting experience![]()
-
With the amount of rain we have been having I will be surprised if some parts are not washed away and challenging, Herman has had his hands full trying to maintain it week after week.
I guess this is what makes us always go back to 3 Provinces. It never seizes to surprise or amaze us.![]()

I have confirmed with Ronel, yes there has been lots of rain but Herman is been very busy on the trails.
Our weekend is open as there is no other big groups yet.
So put your name on the list.
