Default 2011 Hilux broken strut mount.

Hi guys so Ive had my bakkie for about 2 years now, today after some off-road I see the following crack on top of the strut, it looks like it's both sides equally. This vehicle has a 2 inch lift kit with a small spacer. The rollbar was not moved after the suspension raise(I bought the vehicle like this) I think perhaps the rollbar caused this by rubbing up against the spring as in the pic. So my question to you would be could I get this welded up? I have a few friends with Excellent welding skills. Have you seen anything like this before? Any help would be appreciated.

Its been running for more then 2 years like this. Offroading almost every weekend lots of wheel lifting, only now this crack happens. My purpose for posting this is to find out if any other Hilux okes have had this problem. Also this could serve as a warning to those who run a lift and have not adjusted the sway bars accordingly.

Metal stress is cumulative. The fracture takes time as the stress builds and the metal work hardens.

I have had it on my D4D, standard suspension, but hard working farm van.

The van was due for a service anyway and I just asked Toyota to sort it out, the part is available from Toyota and the panel beater cut the old one out and welded in the new part, no big dramas. Our local Toyota has a panel shop as well.

On one of our other vehicles , D4D, I have welded that up myself, and it worked well, just bevel it out a bit first.
This is most probably not recommended, but worked just fine, still running like that.

Did you reinforce the mount at all or just weld the cracks closed?

I find it quite interesting that this obviously is a problem with these bakkies. Here we have 3 separate vehicles with this issue. I wonder if this is a common thing and people are just keeping it on the lowdown. I'm part of a lot of Aussie forums where guys are running fully kitted rigs with 33 inch tires and overlanding with some serious weight and I hear of struts breaking, maybe the odd strut bottom as well but never the strut mount in the way that it has on my vehicle. Something to think about.

Weld her up. Not uncommon on vehicles with uprated springs. You can always reinforce it with gussets etc to strengthen it in future.

Do you have heavier duty springs? Any accessories fitted to the front of the vehicle?

Check for coil bind before the bump stop is being reached. And remember to account for bumpstop compression as they are rubber.

Easiest way to do this is to physically measure the gaps between the coils of the spring.

Hi there, yes I have a TJM bullbar and winch upfront. The vehicle currently runs OME springs and shocks upfront.

Reading your original post again I see that it has OME 2" + small spacer.

I'll put money on it that the strut is being fully compressed before the bumpstop is being reached. This will transfer all the stress into the shock mount and result in fatigue.

Add that weight to the previous post and see how the problem compounds

Winch running steel wire or synthetic rope?

How about these, are they also fitted?

    Spotlights?
    Bashplate?
    Dual battery under the bonnet?
    Rocksliders?

I have plenty of mates who used to own Vigo's. Most had the spacers fitted to the front after installing steel bumpers and winches.

Before you weld the crack, drill a hole at the end of it. This "stop-drill" will help prevent the crack progression in the future.

Maybe also use extra thick fender washers under those 2 nuts on either side of the center strut bolt. The crack developed just off from the one nut, fender washers will help spread the load, you could even weld them on when repairing the crack.

Welding it will fix it - but it will reoccur down the line. Even the best welds can have weak points - I would hate to have this whole thing crack in half on a gravel road at higher speeds. There must be better aftermarket solutions for lifting a D4D. I suggest you weld it for now and spend some cash on a safer lift-kit

The impact on the strut mount should be "damped".

This is achieved by means of
    • Mounting rubbers
    • The shock never reaching full extension (and becoming solid)

Maybe one of the above has been compromised.
