Headlights not working

My left main beam was working intermittently, about 40% of the time. Replaced the HID bulb and the ballast. No difference. Took it to a landy mechanic, and now both main beams do not work. There is power at the plug to the headlights. He said I need a new right hand headlight itself. I cannot see how the actual headlight needs to be replaced. And why it is not the right hand one affecting both beams. Any advice or a good auto electrician anyone can recommend?

Often with HID lights, the one light's ballast triggers the other light. That is how it worked on my LC anyway. Normally intermittent lights point to a bad connection somewhere, so check all the connections and maybe spray them liberally with some contact cleaner.

Since they are HID, the globes are replaceable, therefore not sealed beams. Why you would need a complete new light only your friendly landy mechanic would be able to tell you. I know sometimes the HID globes burn or discolour the reflector, so that may be why.

Hi, thanks for that. So one ballast could stop both lights working? Now to try get a temporary ballast or two to see if that is the issue! The lights are clear and look new, so no need to replaced due to colouration.
I want to try get 2 replacement ballasts and bulbs. But trying to get them as a test first is the issue. It is a lot to spend if that is not it. I will spray the contacts today, and check them out.

He was awesome, and knowledgeable. Sorted out the headlight issue and my intermittent hooter issue too. All with a smile and a wave.
I highly recommend him for any Landy issues you may have.
The headlights were fixed with both bulbs needing replacement. What was strange was that the left one worked intermittently. I thought if a bulb goes, it goes! And also weird that both go at once.

The hooter issue, we first thought was the clock spring. But it turns out to be a loose connection on the plug right at the pair of hooters. Just an FYI, put your finger on the relay on the engine compartment for the hooter. And press the hooter. If you can feel it click, it is obviously not the clock spring as it is engaging the relay. So then just the wiring from relay to actual hooter in front of the radiator. Turns out the plug right at the hooter is a bit loose. Hence intermittent.

I agree. I was at Mikebob’s house this morning before you saw him. I had a faulty clock spring triggering a airbag light. Mike supplied me with a used one for a very good price and insisted on fitting it as well.
I also found him very knowledgeable and can definitely recommend him for any Landy stuff.
