Used Venter Super6 trailer

Hi All,

I’m looking a buying a used Venter Super 6 trailer (selling for R10,000). I’ve never owned a trailer but have hired numerous times. The thinking behind buying is that no matter how much we use the trailer (holidaying, transporting equipment, refuse runs) we have an asset to sell. I have noticed that trailers don’t seem to devalue much so I believe a good used trailer should be able to maintain most of its value... if it is looked after...

As a first time buyer I’d really appreciate some input from those with experience.

1. What is the recommended maintenance schedule on a Super 6 and how much would one expect to pay for a service? Are there any big ticket repairs costs one can expect?

2. What do I need to look out for when buying used?

3. What are the annual licensing fees?

3. Would you recommended the trailer is stored in an upright position on its tail? I saw that Venter sell a vertical storage stand. (http://www.ventertrailers.co.za/lugg...ale-27130.aspx)

4. Can this trailer be upgraded in the future to do moderate off-roading and increase payload capacity? New leaf springs etc

5. Finally... Would you recommend a Venter Super 6 or should I rather look at a Town and Country etc?

The Glider Hunter is old (1997) but it is real stainless steel (body) not 2Cr12.
Also already has modified leaf springs and three almost new tyres.

It does require some TLC and a new nose cone.
The rack fior the RTT is aluminium and sturdy with braces inside the trailer lid to secure and handle the dynamic stresses.

Although the Glider is no longer manufactured, the company was taken over by Venter many years back.
Parts are largely interchangeable with Venter.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the Town & Country is mild steel.

Probably,yes. But I don't need something that will last forever, they are material things which can be replaced

Nothing much to check! Most important are tyre condition and wheel bearings.

Rust, physical damage, validity of papers

I paid about R600 for wheel bearings and service by Venter last year....

We store all our camping stuff in it so vertical storing will not work...

Store trailer as is with wheels off ground and cover wheels from sun deterioration ie dry out. Spin tyres once a month to keep grease soft so as to lubricate wheel bearings. That is what I do with mine.
