Question V8 starting issue - click click

I have a 2010 V8 HSE, the best Disco I have owned. I love this car big time.

He, my vehicle is a he because he is strong and fast ;-), recently started have starting issues.
Press the starting button, he goes through the sequence and then when pressing again it just makes the click sound. It sounds like a relay switching but not kicking the starter motor in.

Sometimes I go through this sequence 3 or 4 times and then he starts.
He will have no problem for 2 or 3 weeks and then all of sudden does it again.

I was away and left him at home for 3 weeks and the issue was there again.
At first I thought it was the battery but recently after a 2 hour drive he did it again.

Alternator has been checked by my indie, all charging ok..

How does one check the battery proper?

Or any advice what else it could be?

Next time it does it try and depress the brake pedal a little deeper/harder

I presume that is still the original starter motor. Have the brushes and solenoid checked. Presume solenoid will be OK (the click, click), but the brushes are probably shot.

    Start with your battery first.

Take it to proper place, with decent testing stuff ,they can tell you. I use Minty's for that, though I don't know the places around you. You want one of those computerised testers. They tell you a lot.

Chances are though it's your battery.

O wait, sorry, I am such a liar. Your car is totally broken, and not worth fixing ,I'll take it off your hands for you though

Does the relay "chatter" or just "click - click" ?
    Hope you understand my question.
If chattering then it usually means low voltage and if given a rest or using a different barry it would start.
Driving a very old vehicle myself I keep a second (old) fully charged battery with me in the vehicle "just in case".

Check the easy stuff but do not discount the starter motor. On my 300Tdi (ancient history) I went through about 2 years of hard starting even after replacing the starter motor by an indy, but that none of the subsequent services could fix (the starter motor is a bugger to get out). Eventually it packed up and the auto electrician said it was a botched job from the first replacement. Just maybe.

My RR did the same. It turned out to be the starter. I removed and fitted it myself and paid R1650 for the recon/solenoid in 2016.

    check battery charge
    brake light switch
    starter motor

those are the 3 culprits I found for the same issue.
