Default The 2021 Official 4x4 Community Klein Pella Exploration Trip (Northern Cape)

    When:

1st of April 2021 to the 6th of April 2021
(Officially starts on 9am the 2nd of April)

    Where:

    From Riemvasmaak to Klein Pella

    What is the Plan:

We meet at Norbit's (Voetspore fame) cofee shop (Berg en Dal Koffie Winkel) in Riemvasmaak at 9am on Friday the 2nd of April 2021.

We will then travel via some of the most fantastically scenic gravel roads outside the Richtersveldt to Augrabies and then Pofadder (we will stop at the iconic Pofadder Kontrei Winkel, get a vetkoek, fill up and then go on to Klein Pella via Charles's Pass.

    At Klein Pella we will settle in and spend the next 3 nights there. Various activities are at hand;

We will do some of Bex's 4x4 trails (Ga-Ma Trail)
    Fish in the Orange River
Swim in the river and there is a pool
Explore the orchards (Date and Grape)
    Brekkie, braai, chill and chat...
Those that want to, can take some stretchers and sleep next to the river at the river site.
The more romantic can have a lovely dinner at the guest house and spoil mammie on some fantastic food and wine

After the third night at Klein Pella, we break camp, and head to our various overnight stays. And then home.

    Take Note:

You will need to get to that koffie shop at 9am, and if you are from far you will need to travel closer the day before, and either camp/ get a chalet at Riemvasmaak the night before, or somewhere near like Upington.
Those close to the area can just meet us there.
When we travel from Klein Pella via Pella and Pofadder, it will use a full day, so you will once again need some overlay for your trip back, I suggest near Upington again.

    The problem, and the solutions:

We have to limit the attendees to 15 vehicles. (There are only 9 campsites at Klein Pella, and me and my son grant will share one)
You have to book your own accommodations at Klein Pella and at your various stop overs
Please be aware that there is chalets and rooms at Klein Pella, but have not yet opened, if they open before we get there, I will be informed and we can make use of them.
There is a river campsite, +/- 15km from the main site, that costs a bit more and its ablutions are not as equipped as the main site, and it has no power
Prices are for this year, and might go up for next year

    The mission of the trip:

We always pass through this area, on our way to somewhere, and I have always understood that this area has so much to give, and that there is so much more to explore. And this is what we will do... We will explore.
Bex on the forum has opened some routes into the farm and with his guidance we will explore the farm, find swimming spots, and empty the river of fish...

    Prices for accommodation:

    Riemvasmaak:
Camping: R265 for 2pax, and R75 for each additional (Max 6/campsite)
    Only 3 Campsites are availible

    Chalets/Bungalows: R950.00 for a 4 bed/night
    Please contact Clarissa at: 073 383 8812

Keimoes; (Please feel free to pick your own preferred overnight stay)
I will be staying at "Ou Skool Guesthouse" in Keimoes
They have some camping spots and very nice rooms
    084 431 7844

    Klein Pella:
They have 9 camping sites at the main camp, but you pay per person, not per campsite.
R150.00/p/n (Main Camp) - powered sites
    R350.00/p/n (River camp) - max 6 persons - not 6 tents

    Contact Klein Pella at: 054 972 9712

The trails at Klein Pella with Bex will be R300.00 per vehicle.

Off road trailers welcome (Offroad caravans bigger than a Companion or the like might have to forfeit the trip via Charles' Pass)

Default The 2021 Official 4x4 Community Klein Pella Exploration Trip (Northern Cape)

    Requirements for the travelling:

    • Please bring 2 way radios (Preferably a VHF with ORRA channels, but a UHF like a Bosvark or the like will also work)
    • Recovery kit is essential
    • Tyre repair kit is essential
    • A good spare tyre, for your car and one for your trailer if you are bringing a trailer
    • Water to drink if you get stuck next to the road if there might be a break down
    • No alcohol to be consumed while travelling please
    • A programmable GPS with T4A maps will be a bonus - I will give co-ordinates and route details in the near future
    • A Tool kit
    • A jack that will work on your vehicle - (Please check if you can lift your vehicle and a wheel from the ground before packing the jack)
    • A wooden block or a jack plate - (These are some soft sections)
    • Enough fuel - The closest fuel to us will be 50min (40km) away at Pofadder
    • The terrain is rough with a real danger of damaging your tyres, so if possible please take care to have some good AT tyres on your vehicle.

    Klein Pella:

    • You can bring fishing tackle to wet a line when we stop for a lunch or so - if you want to do some serious fishing it is R100 a day, payable at the reception
    • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_9ZAEoaayg
    • You must bring wood, enough wood... I suggest at least 2 bags per night.
    • You will need to bring warm clothes and clothes for warmer weather (This part of the country gets cold at night and very hot in the day, at that time of year)
    • Bring drinking water - The camp has water, but bring some water for the whiskey.
    • The camp has electrical points
    • There are trees at the camp, but bring a gazebo, or awning.
    • There is ice available at the main camp
    • Bex has provided a place where we can have a nice kuier at the river, so one of the days we will end the day, by the river... We still have to sleep at the camp though
    • Please bring some hardy shoes/boots for protection against sharp stones and critters like scorpions - remember to shake them out before putting them on
    • Those bringing kids must please make them aware not to pick up goggas...
    • Please ensure that you have sunblock available, and a hat

    Some updates!!!!

This trip, as I explained before in post #1 is all about experiencing and exploring the area from Riemvasmaak to Augrabies (via the back roads that few people get to) and the area around Klein Pella, it is also a sort of introduction to the Namaqua eco trail (As this will be one of the outings that we will plan for next year), but before I get to this let me explain something:

I have to stress, that you do not have to be part of the trail driving at Klein Pella.. You do not have to join us for any of the trails that Bex is going to guide us through. They are strictly voluntary. Even though they are not going to be hectic, I know there are some of us who do not enjoy doing these trails, and maybe the one day, you just want to fish, or just chill at the pool or river. Then so be it.

However, and here I need to get back to the first part of this post, I would like to request/implore that you guys do not just race towards Klein Pella directly on your own...

The trip is not just about Klein Pella, and its 4x4 routes.

Tonight, I will be sending the route details from Riemvasmaak to Klein Pella to the guys who requested them, and what will seem like an illogical way of getting to Klein Pella will become very clear, when you actually do the route with me. It is a FANTASTIC 4x4 experience.

That is why the start of this trip is at Riemvasmaak, and NOT by Klein Pella. We will be doing the route from Riemvasmaak to Pella and via Charles Pass to Klein Pella on the 2nd of April.

This route from Riemvasmaak via the back roads and to Klein Pella via the back roads, is the primary idea behind this trip (I am repeating myself to stress the point), and forms the start of the eco route, but with my own little twist.

If you do not join us at Riemvasmaak, you will be missing a very big portion of this trip.

    More Updates

I have discussed with Jors. And he has agreed to take those who want to go on a dune trip.
So of the two days, one will be a dune trip, and the other will have some of his trails...

Or, you can just chill at the camp..

Rechard, I have spoken to the venues mentioned, and you are welcome to book now already.

Just confirm with them that it is with Andrew (or they might say it is booked already )
