Thumbs up Unnamed road between Calitzdorp and Swartberg pass

    Hi there

My wife and I plan on making our way from Gamkaskloof to Wilderness during December. I have noticed an annamed road turning right on the R328 (heading from Prince Albert/Gamkaskloof direction Oudshoorn) just after the Swartberg pass which seems to head to Calitzdorp (past/through the Swartberg Game Reserve).

Does anyone have an idea of what condition this road is in and whether it is a worth while/scenic drive? I was thinking of taking this route via Calitzdorp to Oudshoorn, George and ultimately Wilderness instead of just the “usual” drive.

    Many thanks in advance!

We drove that road 4 or 5 years ago and it is just a normal dirt road. It was in good condition then.

It is a very scenic drive.

I travelled that road about 2 1/2 years ago in a Jimny. The road was fine, you should not have problems in a Pajero Sport.

I drove it beginning October. It's a beautiful route and the road is fine. Coming from Swartberg you'll get to a T-junction. Left goes past Redstone Hills (a must-see) and right follows the Nels river past Calitzdorp Dam into town. Also very scenic.

Another way to see Redstone Hills is to first go to Calitzdorp past the dam then on the R62 back to Oudtshoorn you turn left about 17km out of Calitzdorp. The sign says Kromrivier. Redstone is about 5km from there. From Redstone there's a shortcut which joins the R62 closer to Oudtshoorn again.

Its a very scenic drive in hills and farm areas . It was part of our Vasbyt march over 5 days from Oudsthoorn via Swartberg, to Rooiberg to Calitzdorp and the spa and back to Oudsthoorn.
I use to DRIVE that section it every time I went back to Oudsthoorn.
Would make a nice mountain bike or motorbike trip as well.
    Post pics once done .
    Havent been back since 2002.

Is it doable in a normal vehicle/platkar, with reasonable clearance?

I would never advise traveling on the back roads with a platkar/MPV. Reason being I do not know the vehicle that will be used and if there is any form of engine/transmission protection underneath the vehicle. Some road cars have a type of plastic/cardboard cover as standard OE fitment (Improves wind resistance).

It just takes the right stone at the right trajectory, at the wrong time to crack the aluminium of the engine/gearbox causing an oil leak and it will be the end of your journey. I've come across a couple of examples in the Baviaans.

Having said that, the local residents use their platkar etc on these roads. Ultimately the decision is yours

Note: I did not mention the risk of a flat tyre with road tyres on gravel.

Try this map from Tracks4africa - gives some good detail on what to expect (for example, the first few km looks like it will be tarred) and also some points of interest along the way.

Yes you can, it is a normal gravel road and cars travel the road on a daily base.

the road is fine for even a platkar. Lots of people drive it with small cars like tiny suzuki swifts etc.
It is only about 45km of good dirt road so dont be afraid.
    Just do it
