Default Dunlop Grandtrek AT3g (owners review)

On Wednesday the 1st of July I bought a set of Dunlop AT3gs. This is quite a new tyre on the market and designed to take on tyres like BF KO2 and Cooper STMaxx Please note that these tyres are the AT3G and not the AT3.. There is a massive difference

So I decided to start this thread to give my thoughts about the ownership of these tyres.

I shall keep updating my thoughts as I reach certain milestones like first 1000, 10000 etc.

It has a 3 ply sidewall, deep well spaced tread blocks and a claimed range of 100k km... It also comes with a 60000km/6 year all damage guarantee.

They make the actual claim that these tyres are puncture proof - (not guaranteed of course)

    EDIT:

Please note that the new AT3g is a TWO PLY tyre - Why Dunlop decided to change it , fark knows.. The 3 Ply is now called the AT3gM - Blegh

Default Dunlop Grandtrek AT3g (owners review)

    First Impressions

    Size: 265/70/17
    Price paid: R2920.00/tyre
    Extras: wheel alignment for R200

As can be seen at more than R1000.00 per tyre cheaper, it did not take much persuading for me to take them.

The tyres I had on before was BFs ko2 and so I can directly compare the two. My previous bakkie had Maxxis AT 980 on

The BFs looked better... and seem to present themselves as wider and bigger.

I physically measured them both new and the Dunlops were marginally bigger..

The noisiest of the three is the Maxxis. Although the BFs got noisier as they wore down. The Dunlops in comparison are eerily quiet.

They feel more compliant yet harder, difficult explaining it but it is as if they are softer but the casing seems to react differently to road irregularities. Causing more feel of the ďbumpsĒ

This is all I can comment as my first impressions for now.

    See you in 800km

    1000km Review

So I have had these tyres for a while now and currently stand on 1625km since fitting them

    Likes:
Very quiet- not only tread noise but very little road surface noise transfer
Very little casing flex- the tread is kept well in contact with the tar, and no flex wear is observed
Better grip - so far I can only comment on dry conditions but I can state the grip is better, because I could light up the BFs by simply flooring the throttle but itís not so easy with these.

    Not likes:
They seem to appear narrower than the BFs
They are definitely bigger as they rub on my wheel arches at full lock

But so far I am happy

Nice tyre, added a set to my Ranger a year ago. Very impressed with them. Good roadholding wet and dry. Not noisy, well a bit more than my wranglers but not so much. Good off road manners in gravel

Please post a picture of them on your truck. I am due for tyre replacement in the next 10k km (so about 3 months, seeing that it is hunting season and I will do some km's).

Currently top of the list is the new Pirelli Scorpion ATR's.

    Hi,

I am fitting the AT5's on Monday on my LC 200. Also very new in the country but they look great.

    Will also keep you posted.

    Thanks

I have a set on the G-Wagen. Now 26k km later they are still good. If someone can tell me what the tread depth is new I can say what the % wear is at this stage.

    Happy with them.

They started with 12 or 13mm of thread , there was a debate about it somewhere.
Mine has about 8000 km on them and I just measured just under 11mm thread , but they still look pretty much as new.
I paid R1950 per tire for 30x9.5 R15's . so far they are my new favorite for hard work.
My only negative so far is that they are quite heavy and that have a small impact on fuel consumption.

They dont look bad considering they are only driving bad gravel roads. My Coopers and BFG's thread looks worse with regard to pitting from rocks.

I have had a set of 265/75/16 on my Patrol for about 3000km now. I am happy with the performance so far. I think that the tread depth varies slightly between sizes. The 265/75's have 12mm tread. Spec sheet attached.

Great thread, I would have found this very useful when I was making my decision, since there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out on these tyres. But overall I'm also very happy with my purchase. I found a pdf on this blog that compared the AT3G against many other popular all terrain tyres and it did fairly well (7th out of 17 tyres tested).

I am verry happy with my AT3 done already 10 000km quiet exellent traxtion on rock gravel mud & puffdust !
Usaly when i drive into a water section with other brands the water & mud splatter infront of grille & windscreen but with the AT3ís its pushing water & dust away & side ways as all tires should do

There is a SA 4X4 magazine(cant remember which month, quite recent), with all the details including the tread depths of the new tyres of all the popular AT tyre brands. Was an interesting comparison.

I have replaced the stock H/T with the AT3 on my duster. Happy with grip, value, etc, but the road noise is bad, never had it that bad. Even muds on the Jimny was better.
