Default Td5 Defender R380 Gearbox? Issue

    Evening all,
Hopefully someone could provide some guidance as to their own experience when relating to my situation?

Just left the office this evening, pulled away at a traffic light and once in 2nd gear a loud bang sound emitted from the transmission.

No gears and a gears gnashing sound.

Pressing and releasing the clutch you hear gears scratching, can select some gears but when you release the clutch gears start scratching as if not selected properly.

Switch engine off, selected first, clutch in (gear noise), releasing clutch (scratches heavily).

Prior to this, I realized when pushing the clutch in after driving at speed and in a gear, like slowing down towards a traffic light, the engine revs did not drop immediately or on some cases never, until I took it out of gear.

Could this be a thrust bearing that failed?
    Clutch?
    Gearbox?
    Transfer case?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Marius.

If its NO DRIVE at all in ALL gears, then probably clutch.
If its NO 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and reverse, but you DO HAVE 4th, then the box has eaten the input pinion and layshaft gears.
    Cheers,

Could be the small tapered bearing on main shaft that has let go,also resulting in 3rd and 4th syncros braking and the hub happened on a box that I used as spare to rebuild my box

    Thank you JohnnoK and clivemd,
This already gives me something to work from.

I will test the 4th gear when I get home.

Then on to someone that would provide honest repairs and cost on it?

    Any suggestions?

    Pretoria area.

Take it to Walter or Org at LRXtreme. Their workshop is on the British 4x4 premises.

Sounds like what my Defender did when it ate its clutch. Luckily only a couple of blocks from home, but still no way it was getting there under its own steam. Had to tow it back.

Drain the gearbox oil and transfer box oil and see if any bits of mettle come out and what oil looks like you might get a idea if it R380 or LT230 if all looks great could be clutch, letting go, end of day prob have to remove transfer box and R380 and then only see what problem is
