According to the gauge in my 4.7L I'm getting, on average:

    Around town: 19.0L / 100km = 5.2km / liter
    Around Tofo, Mozambique: 30.0L / 100km = 3.3km / liter
    Best, cruising at 120km/h: 15.8L / 100km = 6.3km / liter

I suspect there may be a leak somewhere, as my best should be around 14.2L / 100km.

Agreed, we had a +- 1992 80 series carb model. As you say consumption was 4.5; always. Whether you gunned it, drove like a granny, thick sand, open tar road, with or without the RTT and camping stuff.

No 1 of all vehicles ever owned. It was a beast, nothing could stop it and it was more comfortable than many modern cars.

Cruiser is paid off and insurance is cheap, also probably depreciated as much as it can. No way that I can justify a 2.4 being cheaper to own, I,ve got the spreadsheets to prove it
    X 2

80 VX Efi plus spreadsheet to show it is still better and cheaper than new double cab or SUV

i do not check anymore, but i remember once on a trip from Cape Town through the Caprivi to Livingstone, 4 people and luggage for 5, cruising at about 115Km/h i got 6.8 Km/l.

Now i just tell myself that is what i always get. I have a long range tank that gives me a range between 1200 - 1400 km's, and that is all i keep my eye on.

I can remember that it was running regularly on 5.5 km/l in town when i used it as a daily, and once in heavy thick and soft sand it was running on 4.5 km/l.

And I always thought if you can get over 1000kmís on tank of fuel it is good - exactly what I get, 400 km on small front 90 l tank and 800 km on rear long ranger of 180 l, then less than 200 kmís to find a pump - still more economical than buying a new one

    1996 80 GX Carb model.

    5.0 - 5.5 km/l driving around town.
    6.7 km/l Open road at 110km/h.

With a head wind it drops to about 5.5 on the open road.

Since putting Maxxis AT980 on from the Bridgestone Duelers (I Think) have more road noise and more consumption.
Also put on a Viper Performance Exhaust with branches on with a Dyno Tune.
Pulls much better with the old flat spot gone.
A bit noisy if you put foot and obviously gets more thirsty.

if you can find a motor, also been keeping a sly eye open for one. Had one a 80 years ago, good power etc, but then it died and was not viable to fix so sold the 80 as is.

Open road at 115km/h GPS to St Lucia & back from Durban I got 6.9km/L with 6 people & Full Luggage stacked to the roof. Stiff Headwind on the way up.
Think about De-catting that 4.7 V8 if you haven't already. Saves around 2L/100km on Average (unless you like the sound the new exhaust makes a little too much)

The last rip I did with my 80 series 4.5 VX I was running on R3/km for fuel. On that trip we had a 79 series towing a JKU on a trailer. We were doing 120km/h mostly and it beat me on fuel consumption.
