    Default Dunlop AT5 Balancing Issues

    Good day,

I recently fitted a set of 265/65r17 AT5 to my PS at a Dunlop franchise store. After fitting them and taking a long drive i had major vibrations. Since i was not close to the dealer i had it fitted by a had it re-balanced at another franchise store. They confirmed that the balancing was out.

I drove off and the vehicle felt 95% better but after 2 days the vibrations started coming back. I booked the vehicle in at an independent suspension specialist thinking it could be something else. They tested the vehicle and re-balanced the tyres. Apparently the 2 front tyres were slightly out of round so they were moved to the back. The vehicle was now 98% perfect and liveable. They gave me a letter and said i should contact the Dunlop rep to swop out the tyres.

Today the vehicle went in for testing at the Dunlop technical centre. They checked all the tyres and had them re-balanced on a 'roadforce' machine. 3 are apparently in spec and 1 was replaced. Two of the tyres have a fair amount of weights on them, I was told a max of 240g is acceptable.

On my way home reaching 120km and up the vibration has returned in the steering and worse than before.

Since this has all happened in less than a month and 3000km would i be in my right to request 4 new tyres or upgrade to the at3g?

What concerns me is a small independent suspension workshop could sort out the vibration but a big franchise technical centre with the latest equipment could not.

    Kind Regards

There is a commercial member, some Dunlop Community Manager on the forum. His name is Quinton De Beer (quintondebeer).
    https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...-quintondebeer

Contact him and entice him to help you get that issue sorted. Usually he only posts slogans out of the one or other Dunlop brochure, but maybe he can make himself useful and assist you.
But that out of round issue is THE reason why I don't touch Dunlop tyres.

Just an update, vehicle was booked in again on Monday to have it tested. From the time i posted this thread when the vehicle was initially tested to now i covered less than a 1000km.

Findings was that the left rear tyre was 50g short on weights and and front left was out of spec and replaced.

So two tyres replaced in 4000km.

Vehicle is driving much better, lets see how they hold up.

I'm hoping it is an isolated issue as tyres handle well apart from the vibration at speed.

Have exactly the same out of round problem.
Still need to go back to dealer when I have some time.

Anyone considering the AT5 - think twice.
    (On second thought - don't).

Opened up some time this morning, and went back to the Dunlop agent that sold and fitted the tyres. (They have balanced twice, and I then took it to Johan Tyres to get balancing sorted. Balancing was out by quite a bit, but all 4 tyres were found to be out of round - put the worst 2 at the back).

They phoned Dunlop, and was advised that I should arrange an appointment and take the bakkie to Dunlop QC in Montague Gardens. (We are in the Helderberg area - Montague Gardens is 60 odd kms from us, and this sounds like a half day excersize to me?)

    Not feeling lekker about this...

With all due respect to Quinton but I will never fit another Dunlop if I had a choice.

    Eishh...

I am generally not a fan of the "ou tannie met 'n nat penty" type complaints.
    Maar my hart pyn man...

So on call no6 someone decides to be lekker and picks up the phone.
Transferred to the gent they referred me to:
    - When were the tyres fitted - 2 or 3 months ago.
    - How many km's have you done - approx 2500
    - Ok, you will need to bring a letter to confirm that you have had the tyres re-balanced, as the out-of-round portion of the guarantee expires if you have used more than 10% of the tread.
    - ?...... Ok, will arrange letters.

Me now doubting my calculator. 2500km of the guaranteed 100 000 km = 2.5% (me finks?)

Anyhoo - will take in on Monday and see.

If they only check for out of round on a static rotary machine, I am not too optimistic.

    These tyres behave very strange.
At times on highway they would be very smooth, no problems at all.
Highway makes a slight turn, and vibration starts.
    Sometimes, after turn vibrations stops.
Majority of time they just vibrate.

With a busy end of a not so easy year, I was thinking to leave it for January.
Was driving in a proper Cape Town cross wind a few days ago, and it then feels like you are driving on a (good) gravel road.
    Strange one this.

Ek het nou eers klaar gekla.

Ok, my tor dryf nou langs die bootjie...

Arranged balancing reports, receive call and informed that, if they do find the tyres out of round on Monday, they will not be able to assist, as I have missed the "10% of time" portion of warranty.

Dealer needs to submit a separate report to confirm that tyres have been giving problems since day one (even though they were not the ones to notice the out of roundness).

They will submit this, and the QC guys will then see if they will be able to make arrangements to help.

(Don't want to blow smoke prematurely, but I suspect once they see the 4" lift and the 0' caster difference, chances of lekker round tyres may grow slim(mer)).

    Will wait and hear.

(Bakkie has 267k on now, lift done on 120k, personally checked suspension with mechanic on previous service (we replaced stabilizer bushes), and vibration started first outing on highway with new tyres, should anyone wonder).

Took mine back today(5),was fitted in september.dealer phoned his supplier that also gave the 10% story.i only truly realise there was trouble after i did the rotation back to front on the vehicle.i even replaced both my LCA's thinking that is whats causing the steering vibration.because wheels was rebalanced.

So the dealer will send it to supplier to have a look.
Ek voel nogals bietjie teleurgesteld, die band lyk goed.Hope the feedback will be favourable.

    Ohhkay...

Time for some humble pie for me.
(Knowing what I know now, and reading above, I feel like a real special kind of puppol).

Took the bakkie to Dunlop technical this morning.

They do the Covid goete (kudos to them!), and a neat gent with thin gloves invites me to sit in their guest area (tv, toilet and all the nice thingies). I opt to rather wait outside (you know - Stuyvesant, broodjie, koffie, few phone calls).

He takes the key and pulls the bakkie on the lift.
Thought he was the workshop manager, and his hand would come now-now to take off the wheels.

But no, he takes off the wheels himself (and no air impact wrench - proper nice wheel spanner).(Feels a bit like when I visited an ENT, except this is one is going to work on the Nissan and not on my nose).

A while later he calls me into his inner sanctum...
And there is a wheel balancing machine, the likes of which I have only seen in foties...

And he goes to his laptop, and looks me in the eye (almost same as ENT):
    - What is the standard tyre size for your vehicle? - 255/65/17
    - And what size do you have on now? - 245/75/17 (by now I feel like I was a bit naughty)
    - So you see here on the laptop - the maximum difference from factory spec is xxx% and yours is xxx%, and if you have a warranty claim it would be very difficult for me to help you (and now I start thinking - ag foork)
    - But fortunately there is nothing wrong with your tyres...they are just not balanced correctly...

He takes me over to the balancing machine, and shows me by how much weight the balancing of the front wheels were out.
He still has the two rears to finish; lets me watch and explains as he goes along.

The machine is impressive - even has a separate drom that pushes against the rotating wheel to simulate load on tyre. Checks rim, tyre, sidewall uniformity et al.

He runs the machine, and the run-out on the tyre is... zero. Like so perfect that you have to remind yourself not to touch while it's running.

He explains that the weights used is also not ideal for larger wheels, and shows me the ones he will use - sulke kort vettetjies.
When he removes the old weights, he even takes a scraper to clean the old double sided tape from the rim.

Both wheels (with no weights on) run within 10 gram or less.
He sticks the weights on an area where no-one has placed weights on these wheels before (and only one per wheel).

So I go outside while they fit the wheels.
Torque wrench to finish off (and no - not the swing click swing thing - properly torques each nut).

    So I drive back.
    Traffic, traffic, slow tannie, traffic...eishh...
And then I get to the open road, and the Datsun runs as smooth as butter...!
En dis lekker. Nou het ek bande wat lekker sit op die pad en doodstil loop (soos nog nooit voorheen nie)..

To Quiton, Clint and anybody else involved - baie baie dankie!
    Much appreciated...

And sorry about the rant - not sure if I should delete or rather just stick to the humble pie...
