    Default Patrol 3.0Tdi

What are your views on the above vehicle?? Is the 3.0 strong enough for that size vehicle?!

Have a look at the following sites:
    http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/
    http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/forum5.php

The sites are not SA, but will give you an indication. The earlier models of the 3.0Tdi was nicknamed "handgrenade" because they used to "blow up".

Their output (kW and Nm) is higher than the 4.2d, but there are reliability issues.

    Hi , i have owned a 4.2D and now currently a 3.0 d.

The pre 2003 models had an issue regarding overfueling and burning the pistons with extreme cost to repair, BUT the 3.0d vs the 4.2 d
    • A much better overall vehicle, cruisers well on open road.More powerfull and no problem with the big body
    • Tows much much better than 4.2 D , much more torque. If you tow a trailer or caravan only one choice 3.0 D
    • Keeps it speed uphill and on highveld, 4.2 gutless, gets no where fast.
    • No turbo lag to complain about
    • 4.2D have a temp. issue on a hot day , runs too hot, all of them but it seems not to worry the bullet proof engine
    • 4.2D is actually just a motor for real off road work , 3.0d for general purpose and open road
    • Compsumption , 3.0 D a little better , both are diesel guzzlers. Between 6 to 9.0 km/l
I personally prefer the my 3.0d above the 4.2 d as stipulated, the only reason the 4.2 d frustates anybody , including the cruiser 4.2d if you travel long distances .Both dont tow well.
Very important fit an EGT gauge , and the 3.0d will last for ever , have done 175000km . My 4.2 D 286000km .

My 2c worth, yes its got more than enough grunt!!!!

The 3.0l is more than strong enough to cruise comfortably on the open road with enough torque when you need it.

It is a TD so the appropriate care needs to be taken. (EGT & overfueling as stated above)

    Excellent vehicle overall!

I test drove one a while ago. I have a 3.0 td hardbody, and couldnt believe its the same engine. The patrol pulled away nicely, sat on the road well, both tar and dirt, and feels like its got plenty of power for anything. I didnt tow but think it would be up to the extra drag.

I dont know if its the same motor shared by hardbody and Patrol. I have heard its different, the Patrol zd 30 is a French designed engine , and have a longer stroke ect and more power .
i'm not 100% sure , maybe somebody out there knows.
