Default Your Top 3 Tyre Choices (AT) : Size 285/75/16??

    As above??

I'd like to look at new shoes for a GX EFI Cruiser.

Mine is ( I think , based on 1st hand experience):

    1) General Grabber, but the older one, had that on a previous 105

    2) Goodyear Wrangler, had them on a Hilux (the Kevlar thingies)

    3) I also remember being impressed by the Hankook on a Troopy, I think it was the Dynapro MT (not Mud Terrain....."Maximum Traction")

............must be as quiet as possible, those Coopers on the Patrol almost drove me to cheap Cane en Matriekdogters

............as aggressive as an AT can be, the offroad use I intend will be gravel (medium to bad) and maybe rocky stuff, and if unavoidable mud.

    ............as puncture resistant as possible

All Inputs HIGHLY appreciated.......been a while since I shopped around for SUV/4X4 Tyres, so thanks!!!!!!!

PS.......I am NOT a BFG or Cooper fan, and doubt if I will become one easily

My gebruik gaan so 60/70% teer wees, of goeie gravel, so 20/25% bad gravel, en die ander 5% maar low range stuff, klippe en goete.

What size tyres did the GX come out with? If it was 265's then maybe go back to that size on the petrol. Bigger tyres then spec with use a lot of fuel and power on the petrol.

It currently has 265/75's Gareth. BFG's. I'm not overly fond of them - I'm just not.

Dink ook sal werk vir wat ek wil doen Willie.......mens like mos maar daai aggro look maar ja, met dit saam kom ook baie keer 'n ###### geraas, terwyl die "lesser" aggro's ook die job net so goed doen (vir my).

I get it but find somebody with a V8 70 series that fitted 285's and see if you can test them on the GX. I fitted 285's to my 70 series V6 and hated it. Eventually swapped them out for 265's.

My voertuig het nou Cooper ST-Maxx op, maar wanneer dit vervang moet word, sal die Good Year Wranglers my eerste keuse wees. Die Wranglers is waarskynlik net so goed soos die Coopers maar omtrent helfte van die prys.

Petri, what are you looking for in a tyre? From personal experience I can recommend:
    1) Nankang Ft-7 AT > medium aggressive AT tyre with very good road manners and relatively quiet on tar (compared to the ST Maxx). Set of tyres needs to be rotated regularly though.

    2) Michelin LTX A/T2 > for me still the best AT tyre when you spend a lot of time on tar. Very good mileage and very good on tar, sand and gravel. No issues in the wet. Alternatively I would try the LTX Force.

    3) Firestone Destination AT > not sure they come in that size, but for me very similar to the Michelin LTX in all aspects, apart from mileage. They won't give you the same mileage as the Michelin At2, but they are a bit cheaper.

    4) for a more aggressive tyre, I can recommend the Hankook Dynapro MT RT03 you mentioned. Not an A/T tyre, but compared to the Cooper ST Maxx, they give noticeably better grip offroad. At the same time they are the least noisy MT tyres I have used. Road noise is there, but they don't howl like the ST Maxx. It's more like driving with a low profile high performance tyre on a rough tar surface, more like a whooosh than a hum or howl, if you what I mean...
When I replace the Cooper ST Maxx on my FJ, I will certainly consider these or try the Dunlop AT3G.

As to the Goodyear Wrangler Adventure with Kevlar, keep in mind they don't have Kevlar in the sidewall. On the tyre itself it says side wall: 2 plies polyester. I got them on my trailer and I'm sure they are a decent AT tyre, but I think the Kevlar is a gimmick.
I have had a nail stuck in the tread of my Hankook MT (with 10 ply rating) and it didn't deflate. The tyre shop checked and the nail bent after puncturing only the outer rubber layer.

In general, I have not had any punctures due to offroad or gravel road driving with any of the above tyres and I do drive a lot of gravel road, considering I don't live on a farm. But I do always deflate tyres when leaving tar.

You cannot fit ATs to a 105 gx

The 285's will work well with the 105.

As to tyres, I can't really comment that much, I don't do AT's.

The Yokohama all terrains are apparently also very good.

You probably shouldn't listen to me as my recent experience is only with the Wranglers and I can't compare it to the others, but I replaced the older (kaput) Wrangler AT/SA's with the new Adventurers on my Navara about two years ago and I'm still very happy with them. They suit our purpose very well:

    - Great grip on tar, wet and dry. It is more than 95% of what I drive
    - Great on gravel which is most of the remaining 5%
    - Fine in sand and rocks if necessary
    - Relatively quiet compared to others.
    - Great price. They don't give high mileage but Rand/km you'll struggled to find something better.

It does come down to the terrain you'll drive and personal preference, so I'm just sharing my experience.
