Default electricity question: extra connection after meter

My house db board is quite far from my driveway entrance - guess about 100m. I'm busy fitting a gate and wondering if I could tap of the meter box, it's 5 meters from the gate. I'll add earth leakage as part of the install. Is this legal?

I guess the down side is that if I go solar then I won't electrify the gate as the solar will be doen from the main db.

    thx

The meter box houses the suppliers metering equipment and the suppliers don't like consumers messing around in the meter box. I suggest that you install a waterproof db close to the meter box and split the power there.

Those gate installations draw very little current. I would install a borehole cable all the way to the house and simply plug it in an existing house plug. Bonus if you have an external plug somewhere. I am also no registered sparky.....but I am sure that is legal.

Most gates I know of are run off a plug in the garage. Also no need for a coc if itís plugged in

Gate motor is a fixed appliance and can only legally be plugged in if within 2 meters of plug.

Aren't most gate motors running off 12v?

Solar panel, mounted next to the gate motor - you can buy kits that contain everything

Probably be cheaper to install that a DB board or digging for a new cable

bypass the charger and connect your solar setup directly to the battery. have done it for 2 gates here at work that see regular duty and still going strong almost a year later.

If you have a double sided meter box no problem, then you can install a earth leakage with a plug on your side of the box

Can install a solar charger that keeps the battery fed at the source, bypassing the whole 220v thing altogether.

OK, but what if I replace the appliance cable with one > 3m in length? That's not an extension cable, it's the appliance cable.

    Okay.
I said extension cable so as not to cause confusion. In fact the Specification says you may not use flexible cords over 3 meters so it doesnt matter if its connected as an extension cable or "an appliance cable"

The way I understand the requirements, The 3m is a recommendation according to SANS. However if you exceed this length there are conditions that need to be met to make the installation legal.
