Default Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 4.7

HI everyone, I'm quite new to the forum game so not sure about the hows and the whats etc.
But I've been registered on 4x4 community since December 2019 (yet to own a 4x4) but on the road to getting there.
After reading 100s of articles (here) and numerous other sites, I've come to the conclusion that the first off roader I'd like to own is the Jeep WJ 4.7.
I've seen a few over the last few years, some scrap some ridiculously overpriced.
I've now come across a "Fix-upper" at WeBuyCars. Now I have no idea what to look for and was hoping someone here could throw some pointers my way.
I've attached the Dekra report of the vehicle. A few "leaks" but no real detail as to what they could be.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!Jeep_WJ_Dekra.pdf

Hi Rainier - Price started out at R60k then kept dropping - now at R52K (Was also worried about that - because why is no one buying it lol)
    Thanks

Not many buyers in that market. Price at R52k is not bad, have you got a budget to get everything straightened?

Typed a huge reply and then the page timed out.

It's the WJ Laredo Special Edition and looks fairly good. Price a little high.

Let me just toss this branch onto the fire.

Been flirting around this ad for a while, it really floats my boat...

    Hi Griffin

I suppose it depends what you want to do with the vehicle...

I personally would walk away, engine and gearbox oil leaks are in general difficult (only from a weight/bulk perspective) to DIY fix or expensive to have fixed by a workshop - that said it could be as simple as a sump plug washer although looking at the photo Engine 2 it looks significant. Also that sump plug looks odd?

Also it would appear there is crash damage, windscreen will need replacing to get a roadworthy.

I would perhaps make a budget of the repairs add that to the R52k and see what is available for that price.

    Hope this helps!

mmmm I was hoping that if I do make a move for it I'll kinda let it sit for while and fix it up as I go. Will just basically be a "weekend away" ride.
Also I have no idea what my budget should be lol (Extreme novice here guys)

But at the moment i'm just focusing on shopping around for vehicles but more importantly for knowledge - so I know what is a peach and what is a lemon.

My daily is a fuel sipping Peugeot 107 (Which took me a year of YouTubing and review reading before I actually bought it lol so I kinda take forever from the point of starting to look and actually buying)

But all these replies are really helpful - so thanks for that.

HI David, thanks a lot - my first instinct is always to walk away lol just because my 4x4 knowledge is not that great.
Helps to hear from more experienced guys like yourself.
    Appreciate it.

I agree, there are better ones out there. Walk away.

Engine and gearbox leaks might have caused serious damaged and you will only know if you open them up?

My advice is pick a less complex vehicle.

Rather save up for a TJ Wrangler or find a decent XJ Cherokee if you want a Jeep.

Did you manage to find a wj? I was very, and I mean very lucky with my wj. I just popped by WBC, there was an auction starting. Saw the wj, they had to jump it and decided if it goes for a good price I want it. Bidding started at 35k, no bids. Lowered to 32k, I took it. Got a 2000 WJ 4.7 limited with 220000km. It looked like it was owned by an older couple. Few scratches and other than that it was clean. It did have a valve stem seal issue but didnít really bother me as it was minor. Modified it and loved that Jeep a lot. Took it down to Durban and back. A lot better to drive than an xj, more comfortable and stable.

    Good luck

When I first got it for 32k

The mods happened and sold it when I moved. Luckily made a profit.
