Default What are the rules for travel to Eswatini? Paging Karol?

Maybe Karol can chime in here. I desperately want to arrange a trip to Eswatini for some R&R. I have searched the web but most information is months old already so I have no idea about the regulations for leisure travel. With the opening of the S.A borders on the 1st of October I was wondering about the regulations for people visiting the kingdom.

Could anybody shed some light on the requirements and if leisure travel is on the table at all?

    TIA

We are still waiting for the PM to annouce if Eswatini will reciprocate SA's level 1 requirments for leisure travel.

Normally cabinet meet HMK on Tuesday evening ( tonight)to get his consent on any new changes and it will be anounced tomorrow. Along with if alchol ban being lifted by 1st October

Currently as it stands the requirments for entry are 14 days isolation upon entry regardless of negative test- I sure this will change and mirror SA's regs

The problem will come when you need to get back into SA from Eswatini. We not sure if returning SA citizens will require a negative test to avoid quarentine ( I sure there will) if so you would need to take a test a day or two before departure at lancet or ampathe here.

I will post here as soon as its announced, hopefully by tomorrow.

    Thank you very much!

The negative test upon entering/ return is something I could plan around, it just adds a bit to the expenses. I am sure Eswatini's leisure travel sector also needs to get going again and I hope you guys receive good news from the PM.

    One more question.

Is the ban on liquor being lifted? A cold Sibebe and dry lemon doesn't go amiss after a day on the water.

You're not mixing these two, you mean each one separately right? RIGHT?

The combination is quite refreshing. The first two normally don't touch sides

Booze ban still in place in terms of distribution and retail. But most restaurants will sell you what they have in stock. Swaziland brewries still not brewing.

it sad thing that they may close down if ban is not lifted very soon.

we are expecting a decision on the booze in the next few days.

As I understand it, it has more to do with the monarch wanting a bigger slice of the pie from the breweries and less to do with actually curbing a virus.

A little feedback on my experience.

On Wednesday last week I hooked the boat and set off to Eswatini. At the Oshoek border we were screened for signs of covid with a handheld thermometer and had to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire requires you to disclose your origin address, vehicle registration number, final destination as well as contact numbers. You must also produce a negative covid test and it is recommended you have the original payment receipt as well. Other than that passport control queues were as usual with little to no social distancing, although mask wearing is strictly enforced.

On the Ngwenya side of the border the normal gate pass kiosk is closed so you proceed straight to another screening station before passport control. Yor covid test is once again checked and you are required to stand before a thermal imager to check for fever. After this you are issued with a gate pass before entering the immigration office. As usual you have your passport and gate pass stamped but you also have to disclose your vehicle registration number and indicate the reason for your visit as well as your intended destination. You follow this with payment of the R100.00 road tax and second stamping of your gate pass.

Both these processes went fairly easily as there is just about none of the normal tourist traffic and almost only transport drivers. Whilst in the process we also asked about the validity period of the test and were pleasantly surprised that the test would be valid for a period of 14 days, hence no need to go for a follow up test in Mbabane before our return. What does concern me a little bit is the beginnings of corruption amongst the gate officials on the Eswatini side to whom you hand your gate pass and who do an inspection of your vehicle before you may enter the country. I was told I may not take fresh meat into Eswatini, even though there aren't any current restrictions on this. Fortunately I stood my ground and the official was half hearted in following through on the confiscation. He dropped the conversation very quickly when one of the supervisors started walking over to us and told me to go, hence I believe he was taking a chance.

As always I stopped at the Puma fuel station just after the gate to fill up. Current fuel prices are R12.90 per liter for 95 octane petrol and R12.90 per liter for 50PPM diesel.

The foreign tourism industry in Eswatini is basically dead. We were the only people at the resort from Wednesday to Friday before some locals came in for the weekend. The lack of foreign spend is evident as the facilities have deteriorated somewhat and the menu as well as availability of refreshments were very limited. The resort also works on a short time schedule. Having said this the grounds are well kept and the accommodation is clean, they are trying.

Usually, returning on a Sunday at the end of the month involves some pretty serious queues and traffic jams at the border. However on Sunday morning we were greeted by an almost deserted border. There were about 5 people in the queue before us and a solitary shuttle bus in the parking lot. We went through the formalities in a process that mirrored the entry procedure.

Eswatini remains a beautiful and safe country. I left my boat, with all my fishing gear, in the water for the duration of our stay without anything going missing or even being touched. The people are relaxed, friendly and helpful with a good attitude and none of the entitlement BS you encounter in RSA even though the economic hardship is evident amongst some of the people.

Which dam did you visit ? Maguga, Lusip or Sand river ?

Glad you had a nice stay, The fresh meat rule is a grey area and can be a hassle at time, technically you need to get a permit, at one of the offices at the boarded which is free. But in 7 years I've lived hear I i was question twice about bring meat in from buying it in SA.

Thanks for the tip about the meat permit.

I went to Maguga. Next time I want to go to Sand River but fear that might take a while due to what lockdown did to our business.

If there is a next you should also consider lusip dam or Lubovane dam as it is know. Its in the low veld so spring or autumn is recommended otherwise its just too hot. It has huge bass and massive tiger fish. Also the local yabbies ( crawfish) in abundance some the size of lobsters. The locals harvest them at night.

Some nice new small developments along its banks that offer lodge accommodation and camping also jetties like Vakasha lodge, and Lapha Lapha.

non have websites but are on facebook with pics and details

We want to drive through Eswatini on 15 December on our way from KZN North Coast on our way to KNP. Is the Covit certificates still needed?

Yes, you will need them at the point of entry and exit.

The same will apply on the way back and these tests will need to be no older than 72 hours.

Also make sure the borders you will be using are open.

Very good advice - I did read somewhere in the last 10 days or so that the Golela border staff were on strike. I am in the same time frame for KNP but 70% I will be "going around". Sadly.
