Is a 2007 Ranger DC 4x4 2.5tdi a good buy

Good afternoon,

I’m looking at a very well looked after 92000km version of the above with full service history.

I read a lot about the 2.5 tdi engines here on the forum and they seem robust although old tech. The question i have is are these still a good buy in this day and age ? The price is half of anything else available that still looks decent. Are there still parts and knowledge out there to properly maintain these?

I can also live with the fuel consumption

I believe you have a winner there. I had a 2005 4x2 and it was the only vehicle I had with zero rattles. Only the 5th gear was my bakkie's achilus heel. That engine is really a gem. Mine was a Avis vehicle for 140 000km. Then I drove it to 277 000km. Not a drop of oil between services. And I didn't play, I have a heavy foot.

As said above 5th gear is a problem, the bearing is not up to it and failure is expensive. At your KMs you should be still ok but just about every one of these boxes has failed if not attended to.

Mate of mine managed close to 700K km his 2.5TDI supercab, in the end it ran main bearings but they got slack with services and sludge in the sump killed the oil pump.

Congratulations. Sold my 2006 Mazda Drifter just before lock-down with 240 000 km's on. Still pulled like a freight train without the smallest of issues. They really are fantastic vehicles, and comfortable even by today's standards. Just do the normal services when due.

my 2.5 is on 290kkm.

I’ve done the gearbox and transfer case.

other than that, just wear and tear and regular services DIY.

my only issue is rust. But the vehicle has spent its entire life within 10km of the ocean.

So picked up the ranger yesterday and again had a thorough look through today. Still in very good condition and no evident oil leaks anywhere on the engine or drivetrain. 4H, 4L and diff lock works fine. Also no rust anywhere so very happy so far.

I’m thinking of installing a Madman kit soon

You cant go wrong with one of these ! If taken care of they will reward you with a long service.


I have had many many vehicles, and the only one I can surely say I miss a LOT is my 2007 Mazda Drifter 2.5 4x4 DC - I would kill to get it back !

Ah sorry have been quiet for a while. Will add some pictures tomorrow.

Since then I had the wheels and tyres reappropriated while staying over at a guesthouse. As it was far away from home and no alternative transport available I had to fit aftermarket wheels and could only find the matte black variety at the dealers. A week later someone (also with a Ranger ) bumped the rear light and fender at the local Spar. All sorted now and going strong. I enjoy the bakkie a lot.

I have a 2007 Drifter with big cooler, 76mm exhaust, tuned pump and I drive it like I stole it regularly.
5000rpm every now and again. No problems yet. I service every 5000km and use fully synthetic oil in engine.
I replace gearbox and diff oil every 20 000km also fully synthetic.
I never drive in 5th gear below 90 to 100km/h.

To give yourself peace off mind, have the thermostat ,waterpump and radiator replaced as a precautiounary measure.
Radiator bursting from plastic aging.
My bil had this misfortune on his 2 x 2.5 fords. Head replacement for his 2008 . Mega bucks.

Good advice ....

My dad’s 2.5 TD Drifter burst a radiator last week.

Sourcing quotes at the moment for replacement engine or head only. It’s not pretty.
