Default After ten years in a shed. . .

Forgive me, I am telling anyone who will listen.

I have been searching for another Series for a long time now, and thought I landed on a lovely Series 2, but unfortunately, the owner sold it the evening before I could get there.

Anyway, I was a bit bleak about the whole thing, and I was having a moan to a friend. He mentioned to me the he had a mate that bought a Series 3 she intended for a project ten years ago, and started stripping off its trim for paint, but then put it in a shed, where it has sat.

    Until this week.

Incredibly happy to have purchased this "Barn find" Land Rovers Series 3 - Its had an interesting life, apparently it was ex-defense force, was used to patrol the Zim/SA border, and then the Moz/ZA border, and ended up South of Johannesburg, where she picked it up and trained it to CT.

Its in need of a paint, and the trim to be reinstalled and a few other bits and bobs, but it looks like a perfect project.

It also has an overdrive, and I am hoping 1 ton rear axle and maybe a long range fuel tank.

No idea if its 12v or 24v?

Will know more when it gets picked up by 7 Landies this week to get her started.

Looking forward to giving her a new home.

Doubt it is ex-SADF, I see no mandatory convoy lights.

I also see no sign of Nutria Brown paint.

    But it looks quite solid.

Jelo, here is the image from CalVIN.

No idea how accurate it is though.

Thanks Jelo, its been a bit nervewrecking not being able to see it in person, I have no idea of the chassis, but its a good base for a project.

I do need to repaint it - Its the old light beige colour under the green

Indeed. 88s are getting scarce, regardless of Series version.

    Jakes,

Apologies - even though my first landy experiences were with the SADF landrovers, I'm fairly clueless when it comes down to Landrovers...

What mandatory convoy lights ? The OP's photo has a series Landy with head lights, a white, dome light at the below the headlight and a dome indicator above this. Your photos has the domes in reverse order (ie: white above, indicator below).

What are the convoy lights ?

They are a little hidden light in between the two lights you describe. I dont know much about them at all, I have heard the modern ones are infrared.

Exactly, I am no expert, and I am too young to have been in the army, but as far as I understand, it was a tiny light that allowed you to follow a lead car without using your headlights, therefore keeping your positioning hidden, or the number of vehicles hidden.

Also too young - I was not in the army.

I think I was the first bunch that missed conscription.

However, my father was an arty officer, and there were various different SADF Landrovers he had when I was younger...

Jelo, they pulled her out of the garage today, and I got this image. You can see they painted the green over a brown paint with where the trim is removed.

Not sure with the light if thats the brown you were referring to?

She got yanked out the shed today and is at 7 Landies who are busy having a look on what needs to be done.

Yes, not all SADF vehicles had convoy lights, and the brown paint is a dead give away.

I will get hold of the first Civvy owner and see what he says, apparently he knows a lot about its history.

Jelo - when I started in the army, nothing was brown. All the vehicles were green. It was only in the later bits of my "career" that they changed to brown.

The Bedfords, Unimogs, Landies were all green when my elder brother and I learned to drive them. Even the early Elands that I drove were green Green (they were Panhards then) Funnily enough, some of the Cruisers were yellow.
