was just an observation: I think the green stuff was all painted brown post Union Defense Force in 1962-odd?

Certainly most stuff was brown by 1970-odd?

Nope, not correct. Did my stint 85-86. We had a few series landy`s and a couple of bedfords on the base. All of them green, and all in running condition. Later on we received a whole bunch of R6 petrol landy`s, all brown. The green ones were still in use when I finished my national service December 86.

Correct. '82 - '85 everything was still green. And I'm only as old as the woman I feel.

She got yanked out the shed today and is at 7 Landies who are busy having a look on what needs to be done.

It is a small light in the front and back that is only visible from the front and back vehicle and not from the side. None of your other ligths on the vehicle works including the brake lights. The driver follows the tail light of the front vehicle and keeps an eye on the light of the vehicle at his back to see it is still following.

I was at 1SAI in '84 and I don't recall seeing any green vehicles, certainly none in the "Ops" fleet, there may have been some Admin ones.
We had our own full-fat Tiffie section, though, so they were probably rotated through when the change happened.

I did National Service from Sept 73 to July 74 (Last 9 month intake that became 10 months due to failure of relief to arrive in the Eastern Caprivi on time). All vehicles were green, and I know, I was a driver. We even made our Bedfords shine with our special mix (75% oil and 25% petrol).

Throughout my camps, all vehicles were green until my last camp at Lohatla in early 1982 when we did our CF unit's conversion to Mechanised Infantry. All the ratels we used were a dusty light brown. But by that time I was no longer a driver, I was the regiment's Chief Pay Clerk. My 'personal 80" Garrie' was still green during that camp. It was my last camp as in January 1983 I got my discharge papers.

At School of Armour in 75 we trained in green Noddies, Landies and Bedforts. They started changing coluor the for Ops Savanna.

So based on various responses (thanks okes) it seems that there was indeed a concerted effort to switch to brown due to the escalation in the Border War.

This date APPEARS to be around 1975-odd.

I was in 3 SAI in 1981 and all garries / Landies / SAMILS / Land Cruisers were brown, but indeed, I do recall the Bedfords still being green. Maybe because the Bedfords, apart from driver training, were never really used any more at 3 SAI.

I'd love an old R series Bedford with a Perkins 6L diesel engine. Strangely never used in ZA.

we only had the old round nose bedfords. the flat nose new ones were after my time. we drove magidus dautes gun tractors for the 155 canons, the 25 pounders had bedford gun tractors. that would be a cool double cab today. far better than a unimog for me.
