    Default Turn by turn instructions

What is the best navigation software for turn by turn voice instructions.
Is there any difference between Google/T4A/Garmin etc or does this
    depend on the GPS itself.

After driving for most of the day on a recent trip wanted to grab a quick burger.
While the GPS located the nearest steakhouse it remained silent after a brief
"turn left at Marais Street". We were left to squint late at night at the small GPS screen.
Would have loved some more voice instructions. We were using T4A at the time.

Our GPS (Nuvi) is several years old - are the latest GPS's better equipped?

To me Waze is best on road (app for Android or iPhone). Based on google maps but has better traffic rerouting, as it uses live data also from users, and gives info on police and other hazards. Good turn by turn. Free. Useless off road of course and needs internet at least to plan the route. Will keep navigating if the signal goes out but wonít recalculate without - but then...thatís why u have T4A.

I like wayze, but the fact that it reads your speed at almost 15 to 20km/h faster than what you are doing, disturbs me... What if they recover the data after an accident...

I agree At around 100km/h the speed shown by waze is never more than 2-3km/h different to my speedo...

I use an I-phone, when using my android phone it was fine but since getting the I-Phone it changed. I thought it was a change in Waze, but it seems it is an apple issue

nope, my waze is accurate. I think there may be a problem with your speedo

I'm using an iphone so its not the phone (unless there is an problem specifically with your phone's GPS chip). Maybe its the placement of the phone so its not getting a good GPS signal? (doubt it because even with my phone lying on the centre console I still get accurate speed data

Have we not moved on from standalone GPS unit's in cars? T4A has Android and Apple apps, and if these work with CarPlay or Android Auto, I'd suggest giving this a hard look. Aftermarket headhunts with CarPlay or Android auto are about on par with a GPS units, and they give so much more functionality.

If your waze, is reading the same as your speedo, and you have standard tyres on, then the app IS over reading

The T4A maps that you mentioned are not as complete on these apps as when used on a device like 276c or similar, The GPS I mentioned can also be pre-routed off road, where apps cannot and I can breadcrumb a trail, and work on bearing and co-ords only

Also, unfortunately, t4A has not been configured for CarPlay, which is a shame. Waze, Google Maps, Apple Maps - all work on CarPlay. Not T4A.

My advice is when in town, disable the T4A on the device, restart it and away you go. I found if I ticked both T4A and GPS roads program I lost my road speed sign that shows the allowed road speed on that section of road. Maybe try my idea. I believe the two programs conflict with each other... My experience, not a fundi.

    Paul, you're being silly.

T4A is for TRACKS. The T4A team does not specialise in SUBURBAN ROADS.

Use Google Maps or Waze. Otherwise switch maps on your Garmin back to the standard Garmaps.

yes, agreed: use one OR the other, the Garmin doesn't like both enabled

When we overland, we have 2 x Nuvi GPS: one for T4A, one for Garmaps.

Newer ones are definitely better than those original Nuvi's

And the map updates are worth every cent

Hedgehog: Check if your unit is set for miles per hour?

T4A is not good for city use. There Garmap is better. Waze and G Maps even so.

Never use Garmap and T4A together.

Johan, I am using waze through my apple carplay, on the Ford's SYnc3 system.. It would read less if it was set for Mph
All the other apps, and my Garmin read the same speed as the bakkie
It is only Waze that reads more, and only above 80km/h
