Anyone have an update on general situation at Mkuze GR in Northern KZN?
Considering joining friends there in Oct at Mantuma Camp (Tented Accommodation).

    Hello Peter,

We love it there. The accommodation is basic but comfortable, we normally camp or stay in the chalets. Friends have stayed in the tented camp and had no complaints. Roads, hides and view platforms are great. You can have a picnic on the river with hippos etc close by. We have seen cheetah and lions on every visit. Go support and have fun.
    Thanks/Groete

Great times spent there. Just be aware that the camp is not closed off from the game. Expect the possibility of night time visitors of the feline kind!
    EDIT:
Please make sure you secure the fridge door and close the tent when leaving. Baboons can be a problem.

We tried to get a midweek booking at Mkuze for one of their tents at Mantuma Camp but were informed that due to only being allowed a 50% occupancy, nothing was available excepting a four bed chalet - way above our budget.
In fact it would not make sense anyway for a couple to reserve a 4 bed chalet.
    So we declined.

However - to answer the question: As far as I am aware they are open.

In any case those parks are open for day visitors - so maybe consider overnighting outside of the relevant park ?
Those establishments also need the support right now.

Not a bad idea to camp outside at a private establishment
Any good recommendations for camping in and around Hluhluwe/ Mkhuze area?

Just outside of Hluhluwe town is Bushbaby Lodge. You can also try Bonamanzi, same area. Both have camping.

Hi All. Since topic is already open, im hijacking it a bit.
We wanted to go to Ndumo/Mkuze in September on birding trip but just confirmed with KZN wildlife that all their parks campsites are close until Level 1 lockdown.

Im looking for camping outside Ndumo and Mkuze to be able to still do day trips into the reserves for birding.

    Any recommendations please

    Thanks Petri

Peter, why don't you contact Bonamanzi? They advertise a 30% discount for pensioners.

Been to Bushbaby some years back (camping) was quite basic - not a problem for us.
    Prices good.
Basic restaurant and the evening feeding of the bush babies ritual.

Ablutions clean .... but aged, to be kind they have "patina".
Of course these may have been updated since we were there.

Bonamanzi - Heard good things, have not yet been there - however a lot more expensive.

There are also other options on the coast.
All are within a practical distance from Hluhluwe where with a valid Wild Card, entry is free. (Or was, at the time ?)

Updates on these comments would be welcome.

The problem with Mkuze is the entrance fee .... and they do NOT accept Wild Card, so gets expensive for a day visit or just one or two nights there.
Otherwise ... seems to have been upgraded a lot from other's comments.

We have not been there either for a couple of years now.

Rhino card at R460 for pensioner couple

Valid for a year. All you then pay is R5 each community levy
I have checked out Mkuzi twice in last year on way to Sodwana to dive
Other than some electricity boxes installed by I believe friends of Mkuzi which are already broken I would not go there.

Ablutions tired , generator had not worked for 4 days per a camper there. Waterhole dry because pump broken

You visit twice and become the expert on Mkhuze Game Reserve, people read your comment and decide to not go there which is sad for me. At the Killarney GTG you also couldn't wait to tell everyone how crap Mkhuze was.

However, there could be many reasons why things were what they were when you decided to grace the reserve with your visit. For instance, ellies have an irritating habit of a fondness for pulling HDPE pipes around and scattering them all over. The Kumasinga waterhole we battled with as the water supply was constantly interrupted due to this.

The generator issue might be about parts being not available the next day as is often the case with these things, especially if they are old ones.

Camping is not a hotel room in Balito on the beach front and stuff happens. Mkhuze is one of the jewels in Ezemvelo's portfolio and well worth a visit.

Even if there is no water in the campsite and no tent packed I would rather sleep in our car and marvel at the brightness of the stars, hyenas calling and the wood owls keeping one awake at night, like we did here which for us was and always will be a privilege. And not piss and moan about not having electricity.

    Apologies for the rant.

Could any members that camped at Mkuze recently give me some feedback on status?

We do not need power, but if we were to go in summer with kids it would help if the showers work and if the pool is usable.

Love that reserve and want to return soon

Love that reserve and want to return soon
Have stayed 4 times and driven through west to east twice last time today
I would love it to be usable so I could combine it with scuba diving Sodwana
Roads both from N2 and east to R22 very good newly graded and new gravel
Roads in park both tar and gravel excellent dispite recent heavy rain
Veld in amazing good condition compared to bare soil after drought and big fire
Have posted before problems with campsite no water, broken electricity points and Ranger never there for Fig Forest or game drives
Today was shocked at state of campsite. Long grass ,missing windows and doors, floor tiles smashed and no water in pool. Birds and bats have cra
.ped over floors and basins. Went to main office and was told old generator can no longer be fixed so since March 2020 campsite closed as then no water without electricity
A year later still waiting for funds to buy new generators but by then campsite will virtually have to be rebuilt
So only option would be main camp chalets as campsite closed

Oddly ranger now available but fig forest walk under water

As photos say a 1000 words I took a number of photos but it is too depressing to post them

We stayed in the Safari tents recently. Tents were re-done and in good shape. Except for HUGE spiders in the bathroom area.

Kitchens are neat and our kitchen had a new fridge and stove, new cutlery ect.

The pool there is also well maintained. Clean and not green.

We went during the recent heavy rains. Could not exit at the gate we entered. Low water bridges were overflowing. Had to duck out the R22 side from Sodwana.

Just an update on Mkuze having just returned from a visit to the reserve. We stayed in the 4 bed safari tents, immaculate, they have been refurbished and I literally could not fault a thing.

All kitchen utensils are new, fridge and oven, kettle, fans etc etc all in perfect nick and the staff were excellent too.

Mantuma camp is unfenced, we had hyena passing through camp, and apparantly ellies often do so as well as was evident by barked trees and dung all around the camp.

We heard lions calling one morning and found them 100m outside camp on the hunt.

We saw no rhino and very little fresh dung which is concerning and no one would say how many have been lost in the past years.

The hides are the best in SA and some of the best you will find in any african park. Immaculate condition, had a group of 25 giraffes drinking.

Nsumo pan is full and a magnificent sight.

The roads to the reserve are very good and inside the reserve all main roads were tarred in 2016

I highly recommend a visit to this reserve, and prefer it to HIP

    Good day
We have been at Mkuze the passed weekend. Mantumo camp is really in good condition. The camping site had a special place in Riaan's heart. We scattered some of his ashes there as he requested. The grass were long and there is no maintenence going on at the moment. I wish that the honorary officers can get together and help Ezemvelo. Riaan served there as a honorary officer for some time.
