Question 2006 Freelander I 2.0 TD4 HSE (low km) vs 2010 Freelander II 2.2 TD4 HSE (high km)

I am in the market for an SUV with decent off-road capability but not needing low range and have a small cash budget of <120k. I am looking at two options and would appreciate input on what would be the better buy.

    1) 2006 Freelander I TD4 HSE, manual with 122 000km for 80k. One owner, FSH, town driven, no known issues but probably need to replace viscous coupling unit soonish which I think is about 15k.
    2) 2010 Freelander II TD4 HSE, automatic with 195 000km for 120k. Two owners, FSH, town driven, due for major 10 year service.

I am aware of all the foibles of the Freelander I and II. The Freelander I has of yet had no known issues, the Freelander II has had its Haldex unit and fan control module replaced and is due for the service to replace the timing belt, tensioner, idler, water pump and ancillary drive belt which I think is in the region of 10-15k.

Given the 70 000km difference in mileage, 40k price difference and expected maintenance and fuel costs, which one would be the better buy for around town and weekend warrior trips? Also, I plan on selling the car in two years.

    Any advice is welcome

Interesting, how much mileage are you looking to drive in those 2yrs?

Rather take the Freelander 2. The Freelander 1 has a vicous coupling that seizes and destroys the IRD unit. It. The Freelander 1 also pre OBD2 and not many dealers have the software to do diagnostics on it. I hade the 1 and now have the 2 which is a much more refined drive.

Looking at two or three long distance trips in that time - CT to Drakensberg, CT to Richtersveld, maybe CT to Kgalagadi. And then around town, probably 1000km a month and short distance weekends away so probably no more than 60 000km?

Aware of viscous coupling issue and would replace preemptively with part sourced from UK soon after purchase.

Were you able to source parts for your Freelander 1 easily? The indie I spoke to here in CT said that can be an issue.

Any problems with your Freelander 2? Which model do you have?

I am/was in a similar position...needed a capable vehicle, for my purposes not necessary a full on 4x4...my research indicated that the most capable soft roader is the Freelander..

By all accounts Freelander 1 was not to be considered and the Freelander 2 was the one...preferably 2010 onward...believe pre 2010 models had diff issues..

I bought a Freelander 2 2012... my recommendation would be the Freelander 2...

I moved from a Prado v6... In the 2 years I had it never went anywhere that the Freelander couldn't so in for a penny.....

Rather go for a FL2, but as stated, check either that the diff has been done, or that you get 2011 upwards model.

    Parents had a Freelander I, I have a FLII 2009 (140'km) and they now a FLII 2012 (170'km).

Would take the FLII any day over a FLI, comfort can't be compared. Seems like you would be in for some money with both soon. Longevity on the FLII would be better and IMO the price on the FLI seems too high, condition and kms notwithstanding.

    If you like hiking, FL1.

If you prefer to drive to your destination, FL2.

I would imagine the real question is if you can afford the FL2 then why not, it's heads and shoulders above the FL. Even in 2020 it's still a highly desirable vehicle for many people, the FL1 not at all.
