    Default Extension to towbar

An modification to a standard towbar to increase the ball distance from the vehicle. Probable reason being due to a spare wheel attached to the back door of SUV.
I saw it yesterday on a well known beautiful new vehicle. No number plates yet. I covered the dealers ID
Can anybody clarify this modification's safety. Two bolts are used on a 45 degree angle to fix the extension to the existing ball .
There is no manufacturers label or ID plate on the black extension. The new ball shows 3500 lbs and 50 mm.
If this extension is for a bicycle rack, so be it. But I would keep a vigilant eye on those two bolts.

If it is for pulling a 3500 lbs (MAX) trailer I am asking:
    1. How great is the leverage (in all directions)that the extension has on the standard (manufacturer tested) towbar?
    2. What is the possibility of the two bolts working itself loose and the extension starting to sway Left <----->Right . Or up and down for that matter?

    So what?
I am a fellow road user and I have a forensic interest in the outcome of potentially fatal designs.

Probably for a bicycle rack... No way that can be used for towing...

Google Thule bike racks and see their range.
I have a Thule bike rack that clamps over the towball.

The problem I have with that, regardless of its original purpose, is that some ignoramus IS, sooner or later, going to try and tow a trailer with it, with potentially disastrous results for his own vehicle/trailer, himself and other road users.

Looks like a new defender, there's more than enough clearance to hook a trailer so I am hoping its for a bike rack.

I also don't see any sticker or graphic on that extension prohibiting the use thereof for regular towing...

Maybe we are all dof and it is actually designed to be strong enough to tow?

There is a 3500LB sticker on that ball. It suggests that towing of 1.5 ton trailer is OK. Gen4 Pajeros have pretty long tow bars as well.

Gents remember just because nothing has happen, does not make it safe.

It's simple if it is NOT SABS approved (or equivalent) it is not legal, most insurance companies have caught up this and use this to avoid paying out claims.

That addition is dangerous! imagine rear ending that contraption with a low vehicle or just walking behind it at a shopping center.

That weight sticker is standard on that type of ball, it's not for the addition extension!!

Thx ghouwens. THAT SAYS IT ALL.

There is nothing against yourself weeding the gene pool or trying to be runner up for a Darwin award. BUT to involve your fellow human being to inwillingly get involved is a bit too much.

The next question I will have to leave unanswered is, was it installed at the dealer?

Surely I will see the owner again if he lives in my area. Wait for the next installment

    Dear Rustic. Thx
Your extension and its design is not under discussion. It look sturdy in fact Mike Oscar Echo Romeo Siera Echo strong and will tow the Queen Mary II would she is be on wheels

The contraption on my photos is not the same.

Ek het gedink ek is dof. Maar as ons na die reaksie kyk van die manne, dan is ons nie dof nie.
Sal dit defnitief nie aan my Hilux sit nie. Miskien werk hierdie mooi voertuig anders.
