    Default Defender Puma 2.4

    Hi, I wonder if someone might be able to identify the source of a belt squeal/chirping from my Defender:

    there is NO chirping when the engine idling (or while itís starting);
    chirping happens when the engine is under load from about 1800 - 2200 rpm. After that Iím not sure since engine noise drowns the sound out;
    there is no increase of sound when I turn the steering wheel or switch on the aircon with the engine running.

    Yesterday I replaced the serpentine belt but the noise is still there. I found one pulley with some lateral play - maybe about 1mm. It was the one under the coolant pump (is that the power steering pump?)

    How can I confirm that the noise comes from the pulley with lateral play?

    All replies appreciated.

    Id also check the turbo exhaust manifold for leaks. Feel around there and looks for soot.

    Ah ok thanks guys. Iíll have a look at that. So is the chirping sound also a symptom of a leaking turbo manifold? I didnít know that....

    So I took off the turbo heat shield and couldnít see any soot under the shield or at the outlet manifold or the turbo flange. Also the inter cooler pipes look brand new (the engine was completely redone last January) and all clamps are tight. I also checked the exhaust manifold bolts and these seem to be tight as well.

    one possibly significant thing is I canít reproduce the chirping noise while the vehicle is stationary. If I rev it while standing, there is no noise at any point in the rpm range up to 3000. The noise appears only when the vehicle is moving and under slight load from about 1800 to 2200 rpm.

    This leads me to suspect something entirely different. Drive train maybe? Is that kind of chirping noise consistent with universal joint issues?

    Thanks for taking the time to respond guys. I really appreciate it.

    The transfer case can whine a bit at low rpm and heavy foot. Mine does it occasionally. Test it, if its louder in higher gears at low rpm under load, it may well be.

    Mine makes a "weeeeeeee" kind of sound.

    I put my money on the turbo seal also. Sometimes it may even disappear when warm.

    Sounds to me like air pushing past a manifold gasket some where.

    My D2 did the same, eventually found that two of the three bolts that hold the exhaust to the turbo were missing.

    Under load the boost causes air to push past and it chirps.
