Default VERY VERY Disappointed in GARMIN !!!!

    Hi all,

I just need to vent a bit...

So I have a Garmin Montanta 600 GPS... Had it for years now... Awesome GPS...

The power button on the Montana is molded into the casing... Now my power button broke away from the casing (this is only the rubber button part, and not the physical switch on the circuit board... The switch is fine and the GPS functions, but the rubber button is missing and you need to switch the unit on/off using a tooth pick...

So the unit needs a new back cover... That's all...

Sent the unit in to Garmin... They received it on Monday... I just received the an email saying that the Montana 600 is no longer supported and they can't fix it, and they quoted me R8.5k for a new unit (Montana 680)...

BUT, the Montana 680 uses the exact same casing as the Montana 600... WHY can't they just supply me with a Montana 680 casing from this current model?

So disappointed in the backup/repair service !!!!

With this in mind... Is it worth it to support Garmin and buy Garmin products going forward

Email these guys and see what they can do https://www.macete.co.za/contact-us/

Many, many years ago, I had a problem with a 60cs and I was helped out by the Durban agent for Garmin. The name of the company was different, but they were at the same address as these guys so I presume they're actually the same crowd. They were very helpful in getting me a replacement 60csx as the cs was discontinued.

Interestingly, the rubber over the power button on my 6csx has deteriorated and is now really hard to press...

    Several aftermarket options too.

I wouldn't be too disappointed, you still part availability and a choice of suppliers.

Similar thing happened to my Etrex 10. The power button is not recessed very much so I just cut a bit of duct tape and stuck it over where the casing had broken off. I did not bother with trying to get it repaired by Garmin.

Have you asked Garmin to sell you a back casing?

Which is why I use these guys often: https://www.aramexglobalshopper.com/

They are geared for proper online shopping so they will want a "commercial invoice" for customs purposes and that's not something you'll often get from an ebay seller. On the other hand, 2 minutes in MS Word, save to PDF and suddenly that problem goes away.

Before I try your suggestions... I'll just wait for Garmin's reply... I asked them why they can't just fit the Montana 680 casing to my unit... I don't think it's a matter of spares availability, but rather the age of the unit... Once a unit gets too old, they simply don't want to touch it, even though spares are available??

I too had excellent service from Candida.
Unfortunately I do not know if they are still around, but certainly worth a call.

yes, I think you're onto something there: a customer gets a back casing and suddenly wants a warranty, or else while they're busy with the fitment, something breaks due to age and fair wear&tear and customer wants a new unit..........

So you expect support on an electronics product that has been discontinued for nearly 5 years?
If you knew it had the same casing as a newer model why not then just enquire spares for that?

So you'll be happy if Toyota tells you that they won't touch your Hilux after it's warrantee period ??

The "lussie" of the strap of my Forerunner watch broke.

They could not even sell me a new strap, whats to say the "lussie"

And it is not even an old/discontinued product.

Me thinks it is Garmin SA that is so useless.

BTW, an O-ring solved my problem. As well as what to buy in future

Hehehe really? Why would he ask for spares from a newer model if he was not aware there were no spares for his own model?
5 years is also not that long if I think that some companies have spares for much longer like Apple and Rega that I have sourced from.

I had similar problems with 2 Suunto watches and Suunto agent in Bryanston has not initially helped me with parts and support. I was buying some new straps anyway and went there and managed to get sorted in part. They have quite a few old scrapped watches in the back and can pirate parts.

Had a Polar watch and they heklped with butchered spares last year. Depends on attitude of the brand company and their customer support service.

Maybe probe a bit and try to chat to the head of repairs or a technician.

Maybe a call to Navworld asking if they may have some old ones.

The LCCSA guys recently posted that some Montanas (i think) had packed up and some were getting other units. See if you can get a cast away? and replace the back yourself. More PT though.

One thought though is that all retail goods have a limited life and also support life and your expectations may bee too high. RSA is a relatively small market and the size of the local operation may bee to insubstantial ?

What is the reason why people still use GPS's? I've got a Garmin that is 5 years old, and I used it once. The cellphone does every that the GPS can do and do it better.

not contextually correct: Toyota is obligated to only keep spares for 10 years, you arrive in year 11 and want a spare: Toyota is not obligated to supply and fit

The Montana is waterproof, and used on the Jetski as a backup navigation device when I go out fishing. I also use it when hunting on a 12000ha game farm, to mark where to pick up my harvested animals, and to navigate the farm (hunting on foot). So for me, a cellphone is useless for this specific application.
