    Default Which gas geyser make

I am thinking of putting in a gas geyser. We have a gas stove, but still electricity is about R2000/month. Family of 6, 2 bathrooms, 7-8 showers per day, dishwasher, that runs twice a day ( I know it won’t use hot water) maybe 2 warm loads of washing per week. Is it either Paloma or Rinnai which is best, how good are the Bosch geysers Also a competitive supplier. Will do installation myself and get COC, thank you

Endless issues with an 18L Bosch hydrostart geyser, ran it maybe 4 months, it's off again to be fixed (at my cost) , zero help from the Bosch guys who sold it to me, I'm back on electric geyser now.

Have a look at dewhot.co.za. I have installed a few of them and never has and issue thus far.

Can we throw kwikot heat pumps in the mix as well. Anyone with experience in these?

Had fantastic back up and after sales service from the folks at dewhot excellent product, only had one comeback so far and the owner had the batteries wrong.

Heat pumps work very well and combined with a solar heat exchanger even better.

Last time I checked George is on the coast. If the heat pump is the type using the air as a source of the heat then there is the corrosion issue. Those living on coast can comment more.

We have on demand gas geyser at the cottage. We had to replace it now. One of those Chinese cheap jobs failed after some 10 years. Replacement is Delta Continuous Flow. Cannot comment too much on it yet. One thing I have learned. Do not pipe hot water long distance. 5 m is a long distance during winter. Pipe gas. That means it might be better to have multiple different size cheap geysers than one expensive. I have seen several installations done like this and they work.

I have a 18L Bosch geyser installed about 4 years at the guest bathroom. Works well although not used every day. I have a backup pressure pump with a bladder which mess with the geyser due to the continues fluctuation of pressure.

If going for a heat pump go for ITS. They have a patented loading valve that does not mix the incoming cold water with the hot water. I had a Kwikot installed for 2 days before I got it removed for the IT'S.

VERY happy with the IT'S now for 7 years.

Not sure about using air to heat the water. Don't they all use the gas moving from different pressures as per a aircon in reverse to create the heat effect and force air through the heat exchanger?

I have a Paloma at home now for 9 years, not a days problem. Have two more in cottages on farm for 7 years, also no issues to date. Had a Bosch on the farm which i eventually threw away after 3 years and constant issues.

Will buy Paloma again even at almost double the price of the Bosch.

Heat pump is called such as it transfers heat from one place to an other. Fridge does the same. Our air temperature is sufficiently high so more costly methods like drilling holes to ground, putting pipes in to cooling water dams, digging and putting pipes to ground... are not used. I cannot remember the air temperature limit where the heat pump is not worth to use but at least at -15 C it still works. Gas is used to transfer the heat using heatexchangers, compressor and fans.

On the coast these outside units tend to rust.

I was not at the cottage when he Delta continuous flow geyser was installed. SWAMBO was. She was complaining about the flow. Now I had 2 showers and poor flow. Not happy. I thought flow restrictions as the pipes are long and plenty elbows or the geyser is set too high temperature = throttling. We were told that there is a very small leak by the geyser. To check I had a look. There is. To find where I had to take the weather cover off. And then

It was flow restriction. Inlet pipe has a small isolation ball valve. It was half closed. Why people cannot check their work?

As a note. Apparently this specific make has to have the weather cover, which is basically a steel box, over it to have the warranty. Installers do not put it as it cost couple hundred R.

I will be installing myself, now just to get stock, seems like I settled on DewHot, but they are waiting for a container to clear customs etc. And the one shark in Sedgefield that doen have stock increased his price with a R1000 per unit, so no I will not support you, will wait.

Found the water leak. Was leaking only when the hot water line was cold. Temperature probe holding nut loose.

You simply cannot win - workmanship.

Is it the factory workmanship or the installer?
The DewHot 16l goes for 5-6000, is the Delta the same price?

Have you compared the cost of electrical versus gas geysers. Energy consumption and cost?

Gas is much cheaper than electric geyser. We are 2 persons in the house saving R800 a month. 19kg gas last 4 to 5 months at R485

Factory left the nut loose, installer did not check. Installer did not open ball valve to allow full water flow. Doing a proper "commissioning" installer would have found both items.

    Without VAT prices:
    16 l Delta constant flow: R5900.00
    Flue pipe: 200
    Bend for the flue: 200
    Cap for Flue: 200
Cover: not on offer but around 200
Installation: 750. Gas etc pipes were there but had to be modified

Prices 26/6/2020. At that time online price for the geyser was a bit less.

Image shows the cover and flue parts.

Just remember a gas geyser will require discipline because with a gas geyser if you want to shower for a hour you can, if you want to wash all the dishes under a running tap you can since the hot water doesn't run out. With unlimited hot water you won't save money since you'll be buying lots of gas.

It's very possible to save money with gas geysers, heat pumps and solar geysers, but not everyone is willing to make the lifestyle changes.
