Default The 3 Fly Fly Box

If you could only have 3 types of TROUT flies in your box, what would they be?

    1. Dry Fly

    2. Nymph

    3. Wet Fly

    My selection:

    1. Dry: DDD

    2. Nymph: GRHE

    3. Wet: Lake Dragon

    Mine:

    1. Dry: I've never fished a dry fly. But I'd love to learn.

    2. Nymph: Copper John. (Also, for some reason, my favorite to tie)

    3. Wet: Pancora Wooly Bugger

Dry fly fishing is a lot of fun from a visual side, especially in streams. The biggest issue is drag, which effects all flies, but it very easy to see when dry fly fishing. For some amazing dry fly fishing check out a sterkies trip with one of the local guides. Its really world class.

Geez this is not as straight forward as it seems! This really depends on the season and the target species?
But if I had to choose for trout:

    1. Dry: DDD
    2. Nymph: Orange Hot Spot
    3. Wet: Arghhhh this is hard. Woolly bugger (black or Pancora) for winters. Red Eye Damsel for summers.

For sure, for the salt water trout

Post by all means, I wont include non-trout patterns in the compilation though

ST, Riaan has a point. Without complicating things we need to realize that there are three large platforms/disciplines of fly fishing in SA. Trout, Yellow fish and Saltwater. These would require different flies.

I think the Zak is one of the best local trout flies..But Garys GUN is just such a good fly and has all the triggers and more..tough to tie tough

Indeed Luka. We could expand fresh water to also include Tigers and Peacock Bass but when I see my son's fly boxes just for these two species =

Just want to keep it simple to trout but RvW is an avid salt water fly fisher. Perhaps an additional thread?
