    Default Doggy door size

We have cocker spaniels and when we moved into our house I removed a window and made a doggy door for them. It is about 10x10 inches.

Wife is interested in getting a labrador, but I am worried about the practicality in that I think the opening might be too small for a labrador. I can easily made it broader, but taller is an issue with the window frame.

Anybody experience with labradors that can give me advice on whether that opening is big enough?

What will you do to keep the other unwanted elements out?

The opening is relatively hidden and our dogs have been using it for the last 7 years. I am not too worried that someone will come in, the dogs will sort that out.

Exactly. She can get her Labrador but it stays outside.
We have a miniature sausage dog and I cut a hole in the back door as well as modify the front and back burglar gates. These holes are about 10" x 12". I will under no circumstances make it bigger.

Too small, a Labrador will never fit through there, at least not without some serious hip injury. Making it wider (if not higher) will certainly help.

Putting this into perspective, I could not resist taking a pic of the pooches after they had snuck inside after having been playing outside resting their weary bodies on my very expensive leather three-seater couch that was actually intended for me to lie down on when watching a bit of TV...

Rocky is the black guy and he will definitely not fit in a 10 x 10-inch opening...!

The existing opening will be to low and will put strain of the joints, even if wide enough.
