Default Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD engine replacement

Hi All would appreciate any advice - my elderly father-in-law's 2004 Jeep Cherokee needs an engine replacement (done 240k km) he has been advised by 2 garages to rather replace with a Lexus 2.8 V8 petrol motor than try repair original. He is intent on keeping & fixing the vehicle and not binning it! Quoted approx R80k in Port Elizabeth, lives in Port Alfred. Comments/Advice would be appreciated.

I honestly believe he will be better served by shipping the car to Bulli in Pta than trusting any workshop in PE. He knows that 2.8 really well.

Maybe chat to him, his number is 062 543 4275.

Why not just buy something else?

    or another one?

Seems pointless pouring money into an already old vehicle which is not exactly known for reliability.

Yes, this doesn't make much sense. If he sells it for ~R15k, and add the R80k he would have spent anyway, he can get a much better 2nd hand car. But for what it's worth, I doubt there was ever a Lexus 2.8 V8 engine. If that's what the garage says, stay far far away!

What? The Math doesn't check out. KJ's are dirt cheap..
Why spend 80k when you can pick up another one for almost half the price?

And if this one's engine blows?

Any more affordable engine transplants available?

The Lexus makes awesome power, but do you really need it, and it's heavy on fuel.
