Default Bedford Autovilla - Nice or not?? Anyone has one??

    Hi Gents

I'm getting in a Bedford Autovilla. Looks VERY neat. Has a Toyota 4Y engine in it.

Anyone has one, or know these Autovilla's??

How difficult are they to drive, etc etc??

    Any info will be welcomed

    Thanks

I had one for approx 4 years up to 1992
Mine was the bigger one with twin rear wheels
The Bedford motor had been replaced with a Ford 3.0 V6
Cruising speed even with V6 approx 85 to 90
The only driving issue I found was when going thro small gaps etc you tend to look at each front corner but you must also be aware of Luten above cab which could snag low branches

Good Luck with your purchase. You'll have fun. Forget about trying to make it fuel efficient. You're wasting your time. Leave the reliable motor in and enjoy cruising at slow speeds. Even with a V12, you cannot do high speeds in these vehicles. It's not designed for that. You'll get into a habit of taking it easy. You'll see. We have a 4,5 Cruiser petrol with a big camper on. 80-100 km/h on trips. Mommy and daughter move to the back whilst driving, also sleep whilst I'm driving. it's great fun. We love it.

    Short Trip Report/Impressions:

    1) Engine/Gearbox/Diff/Suspension is 200%, VERY solid, no issues.

    2) Its slow - Toyota 4Y engine and 5 speed box. We managed around 75/80km/h. On steep inclines its second gear, about 50 km/h. But surprisingly enough that little 4Y felt VERY balanced in the camper. Town driving was fine.

    3) We travelled 320 km, filled up in Harrismith. 50.1 litres. 6,3 Km/Litre. Another pleasant surprise.

    4) It also felt MUCH more stable that I expected, we had some heavy winds on the N3. I think those wider 16' rims add a LOT to stability.

All in all very pleasant. Its slow yes, but then again I would'nt WANT to cruise this as 120 anyway - not at all.

Also surprisingly pleasant to drive - its rattle free, and for some reason I just didnt feel like I have spent almost 7 hours behind the steering wheel.

I've sold a Pathfinder V6 to the Owner in Pennington, and he has entrusted me to sell this on his behalf, do RWC, etc etc etc.........I'll be advertising it shortly.

That is a very nice camper indeed - have seen it before and know the previous owner.

BTW, where did you camp? Looks nice!

Mike, we stayed at Scottburgh, VERY nice and quiet.

Owner is Mr Bud Morris, they're living in Pennington now. Bud used to have a diving school setup in GP, he also sold Oztents etc etc at the time, we've known each other for many years now.

Very nice "honest" camper, NO funny sounds or vibrations or nothing, that conversion was very well done. And, again, a surprising drive and excellent fuel consumption, I really didnt expect that 4Y to do so well.

Tx. The campsite looks nice - I've only been up to the entrance, never inside.

I'm surprised at the good fuel consumption you got, and that's shelpping up from the coast. I suppose Bud will use his undercover parking he made for the camper for his caravan now?

My Bedford had the standard gearbox and 3.0 Ford V6
Cruised 80 to 85 at approx 3600 rpm and 6 km to the L
Only dropped to a bit above speeds mentioned when 18 foot boat with 200 hp towed
Previous owner had installed 130 L petrol tank

The previous owner, Bud, was practically my neighbour...lived a couple of blocks from me before moving to Pennington, and I've bought lots of stuff from him over the years, including his extremely well-kitted 130 (now sadly sold on to a new owner who can give it the attention it deserves).

Still have two Oztents from him that have proved to be the best thing since sliced bread.
