    Default Retirement house near george

Swambo has this idea to move to DANA BAAI when we "retire" wants to buy a property there . At this stage the destination is Danabaai, as its close to George where there is apparently a very good hospital . So witjin 50 ks from GEORGE with a sea view is the deciding factor , And the closer to the beach would be a bonus
We are planning to use the Xmas shutdown to go view some houses , aware not the best time to do so , but our only time . Can just hop on a plane and go . Buying new would save the transfer fees , but what we have seen is new developments , far from the beach and tends to be on the small side , and most of the time only 1 garage , we need min a double as we have toys to park
please make some suggestions where to go look

Then on a similar note , need some suggestions as to the best route down , pit stop , and then accommodation. MY PLAN ... Will be riding down by bike , N1 Bloem , Colesburg , Graaff Reinet ( pitstop ) next day to George via Oudtshoorn. and on to final destination .
We will need a 2 night stop , xmas & boxing day , then 3 days to view houses , then make our way back home . Was thinking to return via PE , Hogsback , Aliwal North ( pitstop ) home vie Bloem .
I like Wilderness , but from previous trips , Xmas day is a dead day there and nothing is open. Similar with New years eve . We end up having a drink in our room . Suggestions please .

There is a LOT to see in that area and all of it is close to George

You will need to to give an idea of your budget before anyone can aim you in any direction

George is biggish and has a wide range of potential properties to look at

however within 20km of George you can look at

Wilderness - pretty but very "Holiday"oriented
hoekwil - out in the country - big plots
Bo langvlei - charming Plot area along the vlei - semi horsey area
    sedgefield very holiday oriented

on the other side (Heading Mossel bay)
Great Brak - quiet little gem
Hersham - suburb by the sea
Glentana also suburb by the sea
Herolds bay area - very holiday but maybe a chance to find a plot type place

Take your time and look everywhere

I think there is good enough hospitals in Mosselbay and Knysna that would expand your horizons.

Yes we need to know budget before we can make suggestions.

Currently if I could invest in Mosselbay I would. The oil/ Gas find of a few years ago will still have an economic spill off there.

Personally I would look at Botha Strand, Outeniqua Strand and Glentana.

Thinking about this discussion, what is the situation in the Southern Cape / Garden Route area? (Distance from sea etc)

While rust is still a consideration, the garden route is not as humid as the Natal coast and the sea temperature is lower so rust is not as prevalent as Ballito

Places like sedgefield glentana, botha strand great brak are close to the sea
Hoekwil Karatara wilderness heights and most of George is far enough away from the sea that rust is not much of an issue, However you will spend a lot of time near the sea driving around so regular washing of cars is a must

I'm sharing our plans as these are similar to yours. We just bought a gem of a place in Stilbaai with the plan to retire there one day. It is a well established town with almost everything you need right there (doctors, shops, hardware, butchery etc) and almost zero crime. My parents stayed in Buffelsbaai for 9 years and had to drive 20 km's to Knysna/Sedgefield for everything they need. This becomes very tiring very quickly. If you need 10 screws, it's an hour exercise to go buy them.

Stilbaai has good retirement homes as well so moving from house to retirement home to grave is less than 2 km's. Mossel Bay is an hour away with good hospitals if necessary.

Different places in the Garden Route (in fact anywhere at the sea) varies in corrosion. Having lived in Buffelsbaai for nine years, we learnt what rust is, and not only on vehicles, but all electronic equipment and anything you can think of (like the hinges of your specs rusting fast). And , yes, I have tried every solution, with limited success. But going through seven microwave ovens in nine years and putting out TV's and computors with the garbage, been there......
On the other hand, living in Stilbaai for more than ten years we have less corrosion than at our house in Welgemoed, Bellville. The climate here is more of a Little Karoo climate which might be a factor.
The bottom line is, all seaside places do not have the same corrosion problem.

Stilbay IS very picturesque and relatively well sorted for comfortable living

    The good news
    it is very picturesque
it has most of everything you need for daily living
    low crime rate
    peaceful (out of season)
    a selection of retirement homes

    the bad news
It is VERY peaceful (out of season)
it is a madhouse during holidays
it is quite far from everything (Malls, specialised car servicing, restaurants)

it is very much like living on a well sorted island, it takes effort to find some other forms of entertainment if you get tired of fishing or "stoepsitting"

It is also FAR from the actual garden route and a trip to plett or knysna is a mission where these places are a pleasant hop from George

I have a cottage at great brak so I am biased

The reason for punting great brak as a destination are as follows

20 km to Mossel bay (GOOD hospitals)
    20km to George (good hospitals)

between George and Mossel bay you have EVERYTHING one could need

    15km to the Airport
Great Brak falls under Mossel bay municipality (one of the much better run municipalities)

Far enough away from holiday hotspots so no mad crowds in easter july and december

you are on the edge of the garden route and a drive to plett is a pleasure

easy drives to oudtshoorn , de rust swartberg pass etc
very friendly folk who live there (however this is alos true of mossel bay and george)

And with that I have said enough (as I dont really want have of the upcountry folk suddenly deciding to move there)

The rule of thumb we use when considering corrosion near the sea: "As die jy die see kan sien, kan die see jou sien." It applies to more than that - fog on windows, moisture and mould, temperature during winter etc. So, be very careful to move too close to the sea if you have never spent a winter near to it.

Another perspective on proximity of towns: You are not going to travel from Danabaai to George for anything but highly specialised medical services (and it actually applies the other way around as well.) In GP you drive 2- 30 minutes to get to the mall, because you don't have a choice. Here you quickly realise that it is not necessary, so you also don't spend 30 min driving between MSB and George.

IBIWISI. PetroSA is in so much trouble that the whole industry might collapse before the Brulpadda fields are development. It is so far off the coast that they might well choose to work from Cape Town. (But this is an amateur opinion.)

It will be the same everywhere. If you don't want to spend quiet time on your own, plan ahead and see which restaurants will be open. I suspect quite a few more have started to operate on those days, but you will have to book in advance.

We had the same idea to one day retire somewhere on the Garden Route. We have been holidaying in the area for many years.

Everytime over December holidays we have looked aroud, Brenton, Wilderness, Sedgefield and George. Viewing properties over December is just not a good idea, too busy and you are in a different mind set.

So, last year we decided to go to George and surrounds in July, booked flights, extended weekend, i did some research beforehand, made appointments with estate agents. All worked out quite well, we bought a property in George in a security estate, new. The house was roof height, we could choose finishings and all worked out very smoothly.

December 2019 we camped in our new house for 2x weeks.

We have been letting it since Feb 2020 and are planning to move down there in 5years time.

    So far so good.

We have a year and a half ago, retired to a complex on The Island just outside Sedgefield on the Swartvlei estuary.
We are about 2km from the sea and have a very large sand dune between us and the beach which seems to help a bit with the rust, itís not as bad as I thought, Iíve just found keeping the tools and lathe coated with WD40 is necessary.

Whenever we travel up or down we camp at Gariep dam at the forever resort, which is about halfway, and if not camping and you prefer a bit off luxury Die Stijl hotel at Gariep dam is a great place.

They do have a problem with the dams being very low so water saving is a must. Most people have a water tank.
The town being DA run is spotless and the mayor is on the ball.
