Any advice on spider bite treatment?

Have had a bite on my back (Violin Spider), this one we believe a Sac Spider and the one on my back a Sac Spider as well. Apparently, Violin and Sac Spiders are the ones that bite the most. This spiders aim was perfect, right between the eyes.

With a lack of any reliable or accurate statistics, my guess is that Sac Spiders are responsible for the majority of verified spider bites. This is because they live in our houses and are more likely to come into contact with humans.

We do get Violin Spider bites, but their distributions and frequency of occurrence in houses is far less.

Of course we have no proper nor accurate statistics. Even the poison information helpline does not have accurate records to indicate how many bites they get.

I have had two spider bites in the last couple of years. On both occasions I successfully treated them by covering them with a plaster and ozonated olive oil, and Ivermectin. It worked like a bom. I gave the same remedy to a mate some months ago, and he had similar results.

In fact, I have for years no make sure that there is always some ozone oil in the house. I usually buy online from a lady in Jhb. Her prices are the most reasonable, and I can vouch for the quality of the product. Here's the link to her site.

My mother-in-law had a spider bite (most likely what we call a "sack-spider") a few year ago. By the time we got to her (a week or two later), she had already developed a gaping hole in her foot, exposing the bone. We used Chlorine Dioxide Solution (CDS) to wash out the wound and then put a soaked patch on the would, which we replaced regularly, ie every few hours. The wound was practically fully healed in around a week and it's didn't even leave a scar.

If you don't know what CDS is, DM me, then I'll give you some info on what it is, how to carry it with you and how to active it when needed.

As far as I know (or understand), Chlorine Dioxide is a gas that is used in water purification to sterilise water (it kills bacterial, fungi and viruses which are all of those things you do not want in an open lesion). Any open lesion would benefit from it's application. However, in the case of a legitimate spider bite and mild bacterial infections, it would be no better than a tube of trusty antibacterial cream from Dischem which I feel is more practical to keep in your first aid kit.

From what i understand, ozonated olive oil does have antibacterial properties, but no better than a trusty tube of antibacterial cream from Dischem. I would imagine the antibacterial cream would be far cheaper and more effective. As for Ivermectin... if you have parasites living in the lesion then go for it (under consultation with a proper medical doctor). As a treatment for legitimate spider bites or bacterial infections is is useless and a waste of money.

Seems to me that all the 'boererate' that involves cleaning and covering (spider) bite sites, helped the wound to heal well by preventing secondary infections.

So it is rather good, basic wound care and hygiene, which Jonathan referred to, that healed it. Not WHAT was put on together with the plaster.

Terramycin is for animals and 'not for humans', although I serious doubt there can ONLY be used on non-humanoid based life forms. It is rather expensive and no better than a tube of antibacterial cream.

Somebody mentioned green soap plus some other muti's for a spider bite. I remember as children on the farm we were also treated with such a remedy if it was something that doesn't look like cut , scratch etc, or became septic. Cant remember if it worked or how long it took, or not. Doctors were not close either.

Honey do work for septic wounds.

I have no idea what green soap is :-) As for Honey, it is heavily overrated as an antiseptic. It may have been a good antibiotic in the 1600's when they drilled into peoples heads as a treatment to just about anything. Today, however, we have much better pharmacology.

Maybe let's start a thread on comical incidents where people got bitten. Like for example sticking your hand in a welding glove without checking it beforehand. And getting stung by a scorpion... new phobia level unlocked.

I have been following this thread with very personal interest and, whilst I dont pretend to be an expert, I can offer some advise from personal experience.

As I have just had my dressings changed for the second time this week, as has been done for the passed 9 weeks, my advice is not to delay with home remedies (betadine and plaster), followed by the advice of the local pharmacist ( Supiroban under plaster and diclofenac tabs for inflammation) but to seek competent professional medical advice following a suspected Sac Spider bite.

If I had followed my own advice it would have saved me two separate days on drips in the clinic, 3 procedures to remove necrotic tissue (Dormicum has become my new best friend) and 9 weeks of 2 x weekly dressing changes.
