My latest book is on Scorpion Sting First response. Written in consultation with the top medical professionals, this book is changing the way we treat scorpion stings across Southern Africa. Very pleased how this has come out.
Have a look at https://scorpions.co.za/scorpion-sti...response-book/
Next on my To Do list is a spider book in the same style. The first draft should be panel beaten into a reasonable shape by the end of the year.
Have a look at https://scorpions.co.za/scorpion-sti...response-book/
I also have a free short online short course on scorpion sting first response. 10 short modules, plus a 50 question online assessment and certificate. Designed for mobile devices :-)
If anyone wants to order a copy of the new book and support my work, then please go to https://scorpions.co.za/scorpion-sti...response-book/

Jonathan, I'm thinking of being out camping and dealing with a bite.
Cleaning with an alcohol swab and a generous helping of Germolene. And then plaster or no plaster?
I'm wondering because of the itch. How many people would be able to resist an absent minded little scratch or a swipe at an itch?
Aristotle wrote; ''Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution. It represents the wise choice of many alternatives. Choice, not chance, determines your destiny''
At the moment the book is self published in hard copy. Was this space... for a publisher. The book can be ordered from https://scorpions.co.za/scorpion-sti...response-book/

My mother-in-law had a spider bite (most likely what we call a "sack-spider") a few year ago. By the time we got to her (a week or two later), she had already developed a gaping hole in her foot, exposing the bone. We used Chlorine Dioxide Solution (CDS) to wash out the wound and then put a soaked patch on the would, which we replaced regularly, ie every few hours. The wound was practically fully healed in around a week and it's didn't even leave a scar.
If you don't know what CDS is, DM me, then I'll give you some info on what it is, how to carry it with you and how to active it when needed.

Somebody mentioned green soap plus some other muti's for a spider bite. I remember as children on the farm we were also treated with such a remedy if it was something that doesn't look like cut , scratch etc, or became septic. Cant remember if it worked or how long it took, or not. Doctors were not close either.
Honey do work for septic wounds.

According to Jonathan there are 19 medically important species, I am not going to argue, he notes 4 species of black button spiders so I accept his count however I have been taught that we have 5 medicallyy important spiders here the black button and the brown button, not sure how many sub species but they are basically neurotoxic spiders. Then we have the cytotoxic sack spider as well as the violin spider and the sand spiders and these cause some nasty necrosis. These spiders usualy move at night ad can be found in homes so a bite from these guys is possible. That little yellow spider with the black mandibles can sour your curry in a bad way, some people want to let you think it is not medically important but the necrosis it causes is not something to argue with also I have been told by the vets in Sanparks that if they bite your dog it is serious and can cause death.
Necrosis is not reserved to the 3 cytotoxic spiders but can be triggeered by any amount of other spider bites, jut think about it, spider venom disolves their prey and they consume hem as a liquid. Their mandibles are covered in insect and venom juice, I can see where it can cause some nasty sores.
Fortunately I have yet to find a spider that eats humans so leave well enough alone they will not jump on you and attack, same with scorpons and snakes, mess with them and risk being tagged.
A lot of lesions that are being claimed as spider bite are something else but spiders do bite especialy the sack spiders. They will get inyour clothes and bed looking for protection and you will come squashing them not knowing they are there

Agreed. In spite of my own experience with a violin spider bite, as told earlier in this thread, everybody in the house is under strict instruction to never harm a spider. Smaller types are welcome to stay in the house to help with insect control, but I do still have a bit of a nervous streak around bigger spiders, I just find them freaky, yes, I know they won't do anything to me, but I think I'll die if I ever find one crawling on me while sleeping, so if I find one that's a bit too big for my liking inside, he will be trapped under a glass or bowl and relocated outside.
I have over the years found a snake or two in the house, same thing applies, they are not to be harmed, fortunately they have all been harmless snakes, so I could relocate them outside myself without too much hassle.
So far I have never found a scorpion in the house, but the same rules will apply. Not to be harmed, and he will be relocated outside.
