    Default 4x4 Gearbox recon

Hi,I have a 1999 4x4 Toyota Hilux with the 2.7 gearbox. The box is noisy through all the gears.Sounds like dry/worn bearings. Low range, high range and transfer case is working 100%.I live in Paarl (Cape Town). Mike's Place sells new gearboxes for 9k.Would you replace or recon? And who would you recommend?

Rebuild kits is between 4 and R5k. Add labour and you will be close to 9k. There are very few I trust in rebuilding gearboxes in SA.
    Buy the new box.
It is not what you buy its what you build.

    Listen to Grips, he knows!

Im yet to see a successful rebuild that doesn't hassle in one way or another, well around here in my area that is.

R9k for a new box is little money.

I have a 2004 2.7 and collected my bakkie from Gearmax in Nelspruit last week.

It cost double that, but included the spigot shaft/gears with 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.

The latter 2 only from Toyota at around R5k.

Also did new clutch kit while the box was out.

True about workmanship. They have a guy, goes by the name of Rasta, lady mentioned they will be lost without him.

He stripped the box, I was called to witness the worn parts, before they continued to repair.

The cost did include labour at R2k, the clutch was done for free, I bought the kit and paid for the flywheel skim.

A 6 month/10 000km warranty is part of the deal.

I bought the bakkie with 28k on the clock and 1 year old from a Toyota dealer.

Box had a slight whine when I bought the vehicle. Started jumping out of first gear recently.

Won't be surprised if they swopped boxes before I bought it.

It only has 120k on the clock now.

It drives better than ever now, so I'm more than satisfied.
