Ah okay cool. Not yet listed on Maxxis' website under their SUV and 4x4 tire section, hence asking. Looks very good though! Should be in the same price range as BFGs and Coopers I reckon.

No idea... But generally Maxxis do not advertise their sidewall rating

That is no good if they do not say, I am also not interested so much in the ply rating, but rather the actual numbers of sidewall plies. It is an important factor in looking for tyres, they should at least say their tyre model has 3 ply sidewall if they do have.

Having said that, generally if they say the tyre is a 6PR (6 Ply Rating), is means in term of strength, it is as strong as an old Cross Ply tyre that had 6 plies. Modern tyres rated as 6PR often only have three plies on the tread portion of the casing, two plies of cotton (actually Rayon or Nylon) across the whole tyre tread and one steel ply, the two cotton plies then continues to the bead. These are your SUV type 2 ply sidewall tyres and mostly has a load rating of around 109/112.

Generally, and I really mean only generally, not always, an 8 PR tyre will have 3 sidewall plies. An 8PR tyre, is by reason of its construction a heavier tyre, sturdier (thicker) sidewall rubber and usually 3 plies in the sidewall. These would have 3 plies from bead to bead and an additional steel ply in the tread area. This is also a tyre called a LT (Light Truck) tyre, the type of tyre recommended for heavy load and extreme rocky areas when over-landing. it will also have a 121/118 load rating or better. Some of these LT tyres may even be a 10PR tyres

So 6PR, 8PR, and 10PR are not actually the number of plies, it is only an indicative rating, meaning "as strong as a conventional cotton plies of this number of plies". Tyres do not actually have these numbers of plies today, because that many plies makes the side walls too hard, thick and unforgiving, causing a lot of heat buildup and leading to eventual premature tyre failure.

I want to sit at home, see on a manufacturers' websites which tyres have 3 ply sidewalls and then go on the internet find real life experiences guys have had with the tyres. I want to know how the average over-lander rates those tyres, for grip in sand on rock, on dry or wet tar, and how do they last?

If I do not find the number of side wall plies on the manufacturer's website, I generally do not bother with that specific tyre. I know for instance, that BGF, Cooper, Dunlop AT3G, Sailun and now these Maxxis tyres have 3 ply sidewall plies.

I will only fit 3 ply tyres on my Patrol, which I only use on taking visitors on safari. I lost 3 tyres in two days in Northern Namibia going on an extreme route. The tyres were good ATRs, but only had 2 ply sidewalls. It is not a good advert for your business to loose 3 tyres on one trip, never mind in two days. Three ply sidewalls are not totally immune to sidewall cuts, but they have better cut resistance and are not often penetrated buy sticks and those thick white (Acacia) thorns .

Spoke to one of the Maxxis reps, no price at the moment as stock will only be available from September, but would be slightly more than the 980 Bravo's.

    Let's put it differently.

Maxxis have got the compound down pat and the sidewall protection is brilliant.

Be it the Razr, Mining Razr or the AT Razr, I will go head to head with anybody.

I have the 245 Razrs on my Disco 1 and 285 Razrs on my Defender Td5 and it is the quietest mud I have used so I have no doubt the AT will be excellent.. My 90 still has Grabber X3s on it but will change these for Maxxis when the time is right.

Reviving this thread as I need to replace my BFG KO2's and there is no BFG stock in the country. Dealers tell me they are only expecting stock at the end of October.

Rivonia Tyre have been trying to get me a price on the Maxxis Razr AT's, but can't get hold of Maxxis SA or their rep.

Has anyone had any luck in sourcing these tyres yet? If so, what did you pay for them?
