Default Where to mount VHF Arial?

    Hi All

Looking for some advice of where to mount my ZARA60 VHF Arial.

Here is my scenario. New FrontRunner roof rack and see that FR also do a Antenna swivel mount option to the rack (see attached).
Nice thing about this you can just swing it to its side if you don't use the radio and do the mall crawling thing.

The second option I have is on the Ironman Bumper in front. Swambo just doesn't like the antenna wip, as she will be driving the SUV in the week.

I have not come across many that have used the FR ones so don't know the pro's and cons to this one as well as mounting on the bumper vs on the side of the roof with a mount.

Appreciate any feedback I can get.

Speak to Family_Dog (Eric from Repcom) he will give you the best advice.
Personally my first thought was, the roof rack mount will have the antenna higher, better range?

I also thought same, but then a read on another post that mouting on side of rack will cause problems and it should ideally be in the middle due to the way the signal waves bounce travel off the car. Something technical like that.

Feeling frustrated, as I am getting someone to install it for me today. But is seems this company subcontracts a guy who only does the fitment but dont really understand the technical aspect of this. Could gather when I started asking him questions.

What i can say from my limited experience is that , yes, mounting the antenna in the middle of a large surface are is probably ideal. But, i have had antennas in various locations and they all work fine for the convoy travelling we do. I am currently using a "through glass" antenna and it works a charm.(after being warned against it)

Apologies for only seeing this now. I have been working from home but we do have staff at the office who will pass on my contact details when required.

Middle of roof is correct for best performance, second choice is either a side pillar mount for the Zara or the roof rack. Mounting it anywhere else, i.e. front fender or bull bar will compromise your radio's performance but it will still be fine for convoy driving.

Mounting it on a fibreglass canopy is also not ideal because the antenna needs a surrounding metal surface of diameter equal to the length of the whip for best performance. You could do so if you use aluminium foil inside the canopy to emulate a ground plane.

So here is my final job. Was a bit of a mission channeling the cable all the way to the front, but it is done now.

Not so sure about the performance.
