I really don't get this obsession with pricing.

They have given an indicator pricing of 40k GBP, that's merely a target. It's likely to change given how commodity prices have increased in the last 6 months, but that is a situation affecting all manufacturers.

Which manufacturer has even given pricing while they are still developing the vehicle? I'm pretty sure a big, fat zero. Why would you, what if you need to change something near the end? It doesn't make commercial sense to do that.

Ineos are doing things differently by taking us along on the ride of development and testing - we should be grateful for that because absolutely no other manufacturers out there do that either.

Can't we have a little bit of patience? We don't even know for sure if it will be available locally.

Which is, give or take, what the New Defender (the Land Rover one) costs in UK, I think?

In the UK. And that's already very dear, if it indeed is meant to be the replacement for the old defender. Slap on import duties and let's see where local pricing is headed...

Right so SARS adds the following
For vehicles or persons that do not qualify for exemption, the rate of duty payable is calculated based on the value of the vehicle.

    • For vehicles up to 20 years old may be applied at a rate of up to 36%
    • With vehicles in excess of 20 years old being subject to a rate of 20%.
    • An ad valorem duty rate may also be applied (based on a sliding scale) at a rate of between 0.75% and 20% of the vehicle dependent on the age and value of the vehicle.
    • VAT, if payable, is charged at a standard rate of 15%.
    • The South African VAT act sets the value on which VAT is calculated as being the value of goods plus customs duty levied plus a further 10% of that value

So assume GBP 40 000. This is then R 798 400 at todays rather favourable R19.96 exchange rate. So to simplify I will kmae it R 800 000.
    We have 36% duty Which is R 288 000
Ad valoream duty. Lets help ourselves and assume Ineos do a goos job with SARS and add 5% I suspect we will be closer to 20% for this type of vehicle. R 40 000 - R 160 000
VAT and customs VAT another 16.5% another R 132 000

So all in we are looking at R 1.26 million to R 1.38 million excluding freight.
2 popints. To allow for Exchange rate fluctuations I would expect that number to be closer to R 1.4 to R 1.6 million. The other is freight. Right now fresight is terrifying. My freight on certain goods from Europe has doubled. A car sized machine costs me R 155 000 where before covid it was closer to R 60 000.

Thankfully the UK is right hand drive else we would have been closer to R 2 million like the G-wagon.

You do know bourgeoisie is middle class right? Or are you applying the marxist definition?

Also the old Defender was not exactly cheap when it was new and on sale compared to the competition. Why does everyone expect the Grenadier to be 'cheap'? It's a specialist vehicle not an appliance at your local store.

Matt, in your efforts to make the Grenadier as expensive as you can you are missing one main point. 40k GBP is the retail price in the UK and includes 20% VAT. You also need to deduct the dealership margin, so in all likelihood you are now looking at around 30k for your sums. Even that is a guess and why I have said it is pointless trying to work out how much this is going to land here (if at all). We don't know if some parts are being made here and that can be used as an offset, for example. You can't add customs VAT onto the retail price, you claim that back from SARS.

Indicated pricing in the UK is 45000 GBP, which is about the same as the new Defender. So yes, 1 bar plus for sure

Agree. I think if you could sit with the interior designer there will be a logical explanation for each button and switch and its position.

It looks like that interior would face major changes at the first facelift. It looks really nice to me, but I canít see cap screws and all those little aviation style widgets making it to a serious production vehicle unless they are trying to price it like a Zonda.
