A £30,000 starting price is very competitive, if true.

"The Grenadier is aimed at a price point of £30,000 to £45,000 so it will undercut Land Roverís own Defender by quite a margin, and initial production volumes of 25,000 to 30,000 are planned (from late 2021) from a brand new factory at Bridgend in Wales, making it British built unlike the Defender which is being built at Nitra in Slovakia".

As reliable as I am sure that motor is.
    3. Gearbox: an 8 speed auto sticks out as something that definitely has a lot that can go wrong. But having just spent R30k on a gearbox overhaul for our manual Fortuner, thats kind of the way gearboxes can be. But most end-days type people are going to prefer a manual
The engine and gearbox stands out for me. It will be a comfortable, powerful and probably quite reliable combination.

The engine is probably a B57 - with one turbo that makes 195kw and 620nm. Could be detuned a bit and I would think that it is imperative that it can run on 500ppm - in current form it is 50ppm only (I stand to be corrected). Never the less I think it is likely to be quite reliable.

The auto box is probably the std 8speed ZF found in the D4, GC and X5. Nothing to be afraid of there - just take it for an oil service every 80-100k kms. These boxes just need some fresh oil once in a while and in my opinion will last a long time.

If it is indeed priced like this and there is a quantifiable service / backup structure they should do well!

It's also be great if they offer an entry level version. 110 kW 360 N.m 4 cylinder motor, or N/A BMW six, with a manual gearbox. Only the basic luxuries, A/C, power steering, single DIN radio with the price adjusted accordingly.

As predicted. They are now playing in a very established market with competitive prices. The old Defender was a niche product but filled that niche solidly for many years. Only the LC70 came close.

I once said that Land Rover were playing catch-up with the new Defender and of course I was ridiculed.

The New Defender is not new, this type of vehicle has been around for decades.

I wonder how may of the 11000 New Defender sales have been scavenged off the sales of other Land Rover models, like the D5?

It is going to take over 2 yrs before we even see one produced, never mind delivered here down South.
I think JLR , can take advantage of this, sooner than later have the commercial entry level spec vehicles on the market, in Hardtop versions, and the ingenium straight six engines in them as well.

Back to Grenadier(named after Ratcliff's favourite pub), dont you guys think the grill , is too narrow, only there it looks out of proportion, I think the aestetics of the grill design is a bit puny, a wider more agressive looking grill will look better.

They are not direct competition to one another.. the Grenadier will be targeting the Land Cruiser 70 market. The New Defender is in the same market as the Touareg.

Looks are irrelevant, it's a workhorse, not a Sandton mall crawler.

That is the one part of the styling which I also find a bit off. The nose as a whole is a bit narrow, almost like a woman with thin lips!

To say Defender is in Touareg class?
Chalk and cheese, you cant even compare the off road credentials
Defender is a true pukka off roader

Not a Defender no.. but in principle the same as the New Defender. Complex monocoque, chassis, independently air sprung suspension luxury off-road family bus.

The point I originally made, was that the New Defender is in the same class as the Touareg, not the Grenadier. I'm sure that the New Defender will have the off-road edge, but they are built on very similar platforms and there won't be much in it, as an example, the New Defender has 291 mm of ground clearance, the Touareg 285 mm.

As a off-road truck/workhorse. The Grenadier doesn't directly compete in the same class.

I've spent some time in the new Touareg and the new Defender is not in the same class.

I also thought ithe new defender would be in that lux suv class but it's not.

I think pricing is going to be the issue that will determine sales.

There is a market for both and in the long run the new Defender will have a cult following.

    Some interesting days ahead.
