    Default Maximum Starting Mileage

    Hi Everyone,

I am in the market for a double cab and I am looking at good used ones which are either 4x4 or 4x2. I would like to know if there is a golden rule when it comes to the maximum starting mileage when buying used for certain makes? I have been speaking to some service departments, where I have a good business relationship through our company, and they have given me their inputs but I would like to get the input from owners as well. Whether positive or negative, as much as possible feedback would be highly appreciated.

I have been burned a couple of times when buying high mileage vehicles and would like to avoid being burned again.

Vehicles I am looking at are:

    Ford Ranger / Mazda BT50 2.2 and 3.2
    Toyota Hilux 2.5 D4D, 3.0 D4D, 2.4 GD6 and 2.8 GD6
    Nissan Navara 2.3D
    Mercedes X-class 220d and 250d
    VW Amarok TDI and BiTDI
    Mitsubishi 2.5D and 2.4D

I am looking at both auto and manual models.

If there are any of the above models, which I should forget completely, please let me know which ones and what the reason is.

    Regards

    Piet

I suppose it depends on various factors:

    1) Starting mileage
    2) Age of the vehicle (Years)
    3) Your intended annual mileage
    4) Capacity for risk

I purchased a relatively high mileage 3.2 Ranger (80k km) but I have only put 30 000km on it in 3 years because I use a company runabout for most driving. If I were driving 100km a day and it was my only means of transport I may have thought twice about it.

I'd stay away from the Merc X series completely.

    - low sales volumes
    - discontinued
    - spares availability / very few scrapyard spares
    - no aftermarket spares
    - manufacturer will stop stocking spares in less than 10 years

There are so many variable that I have a golden rule of max 20 000 km per year as a starting point. From there you can delve into more detail.

We do actually drive almost 100km a day to work and back but the bakkie would not be our main day to day vehicle. We would probably do about half of our normal annual mileage which should be in the region of about 15000km. Age wise, it will have to be within what the bank will still finance, personally I would not like to go older than 2015. Ideally I would prefer to start below 50000km but that jacks up the price and I would rather put the money I pay less per month a side for future repairs / services or upgrades.

Thanks, the only reason I was considering the X-Class was because of it's high NCAP safety rating and then also its warranty. The 6 year or 100000km maintenance plan. The models I was looking at were 2018 models which gives me 4 years or the remaining kilometers where all maintenance cost, except for fuel and tyres, would be covered. All the other vehicles come with a service plan as standard which does not cover maintenance items. but I am concerned about the fact that it has been discontinued.

I think that service history is more important than mileage/kilometreage, A low mileage vehicle which has been badly treated and poorly maintained will be more likely to give problems than a "high mileage" vehicle which has been looked after.

There is one glaring omission from your list. Isuzu KB 250/300. I bought a KB250 (albeit the original clattery direct injection one) with 660 000 km on the clock, and I gooied another 200 000 on it. Just saying. My current 250 D-TEQ has 393 000 km on it.

Actually already discontinued in Europe a few months ago: https://www.parkers.co.uk/vans-picku...-discontinued/

Good news is that you will get a Ama-Ford from 2022 in SA that will carry the VW badge...

Thanks, was my fault. They are on my list, especially the 300 model. The one must have for me a lockable tailgate. On the 250 it can be retrofitted but the dealer charges about R8000 to have it fitted. Then they actually fit the chrome lock and handle set from the 300 model.
