These guys need to be recognised for doing a proffesional docuemtation of the development of this vehicle.

I don't think any manufactures has been so open about its development of a new vehicle.

You and I both don't know what JLR has in plan and why they are fighting to preserve IP behind their icon.

You never know, may be they are prepping a surprise for the old defender crowd....
What intellectual property? Apart from looking vaguely similar, which is dictated by function anyway. They have nothing in common.

    If it is this one:

The Rubi didn't have lockers on (you can see that at various places in the vid), took a much harder line, and is actually a 137 inch wheelbase Gladiator that TFL decided to use instead of a real Rubi with a similar wheelbase.

    This was a kiss-LandRovers-ass vid.

Looks great. Full time 4WD confirmed.

What impresses me is the breadth (and expense) of their testing program. Not that testing is all thats required, but it shows a commitment to the investment that will be essential to make something thats proper. Lots of test vehicles.

They will just need to keep that cash flowing through the whole process which is likely to be longer than they planned, as these things almost always are.

The selling price and sales volumes that they will need (or want) in order to payback that investment are going to be the make or break

Did you watch the video? In the opening few seconds the Jeep driver battles. Stops and tells the cameraman he is engaging the diff lock. The driver thought he had diff locks. If it looks to you like they weren't then possibly the Jeep is not functioning correctly but from my viewing, the wheels were turning in concert. It is possible the driver only engaged the rear locker though.

Yes, Wheelbase was a hamper but ground clearance was the biggest challenge to the gladiator. A good argument in favour of air suspension. The Defender took the same line as the Gladiator and Defender 90.

What the video showed me is that out the box a Defender is surprisingly capable as is the Disco 3, 4 and 5. You might have to lift a Jeep a little and if it's a Toyota you also need to change the springs to OME or some other.

The Grenadier is going to need some out the box thinking to address issues like ground clearance etc to be as capable as any of these vehicles out the box.

Precisely. He reverses, engages DL, takes a decent line, and suddenly no more issues. It's stupid to go over the biggest rock in sight with a stock Gladdie and no diff locks.

Comparing a 137 inch wheelbase barge with no suspension lift to a 119" New Defender with modified suspension (yes, they added rods) is a little counter-intuitive, don't you think?

    Anyhoo..........you probably don't think so.

The reality is rods or no that lift is within the Defenders range of movement. If he had beached it on normal lift height he could lit it to extended lift which is the same as rods and then added off-road height. So the lift is available to the unmodified car.

The Jeep still battled after engaging the diff-lock but will accept it was probably driver related. The Defender still did better than I thought it would without the rear diff going over the same boulders the Jeep did with a little less stress.

The comparison is more about those were the guys who wanted to go along with the Defender test drive.

I donít believe JLR can claim to owning that shape. Many vehicles look similar to each other. My Nike trainers look very similar to my adidas ones.
I think itís completely ridiculous and truly hope JLR donít win this one.

If they felt that strongly about the shape why didn't they bother keeping it.

If the price is right, they will give the new Land Rover Defender a good go. I love the shape!

If this thing was offered at max R800k odd it would sell like hot cakes. At the current indicated price it's like buying a GWM at the same price as a Hilux. I doubt any real Toyota person would justify that swop. We can safely assume the forum spammers would spin a story on how thats a bad comparison, but in reality its unfortunately the same. One is known and trusted with ample backup and heritage. The other, none, or little, of the above.
