Beware of these dealers. They are normally in JHB CBD or Bramley. I do not trust them. Once looked at a Hilux at one of them about 2 years ago. Looked like it was repainted with a tin of PVC and a brush.

I can vouch for the X1 from the germans - luckily their resale value is not great if you buy 2nd hand

Nope, CVT is still an utterly stupid gearbox, nothing has changed there.

I have often wondered about that. Used BMW X1 are dirt cheap

I see the newer facelifted ones seem to hold value a bit better.

But the older shape has no value.

You can find 2012 models with barely 100k mileage on for R120 000.

Besides the loud droning sound when you floor it on the highway, I quite enjoy the CVT box in the X-Trail. The way that it constantly adjusts, without you noticing it, so that you are always in the sweet spot in the rev range is really cool...

I have no issue with it...and that's with daily traffic, highway cruising and off-road driving...

Your criteriateria makes it tough! If I keep to your criteria the only vehicle that comes up is a Suzuki Jimny with normal auto box.

RAV has CVT, X-Trail has CVT, Tiguan has DSG, Subaru XV has CVT. Out of these options only the X-Trail and Subaru will fall in the newer than 2016 for less than R210k bracket. Both are good and reliable with the X-Trail winning the space race.

    - baby suv

    - japanese, maybe german. Definitely not british, american or chinese.
    - petrol (maybe diesel at a great deal)
    - 2016 or newer
    - around R210k cash deal
    - must be automatic (torque converter, not DSG or CVT)

    - No, I don't want to look at proper SUVs (personal reasons)
    - No, I don't want to look at freelanders

    What would you buy?
I recently sold my 2015 XC60 for 230k with just below 90k km.
If you shop around a bit you might find one for your price bracket with a few more kms on it.

Very nice car, let your friend go test drive one, preferably one with the polestar remap.

We sold our 2.4 AWD CRV after we, surprisingly, had endless problems with the gearbox and aircon (we must have bought a Friday afternoon dud). This was the previous model with the conventional auto.

I would look at the Grand Vitara or Subaru. Apart from being thirsty you cant really beat them for value when bought used.

May I ask the primary rationale for it needing to be AWD?

Nissan Qashqui, don't know what box it got though?

A client has a 1.5dCi and he is very impressed with it and good fuel consumption.
