Default 19” to 18” rims on LR4 HSE

I have owned my LR disco 4 HSE for 9 years. It is stock. 19” 55 profile tyres. Now I want to do more trips locally. Am also booked for self drive tour to Kaokoland in September, although I doubt this trip will happen this year. I have never liked the low profile tyres and always considered getting 18” rims. Never had to off-road on serious rocks but have done gravel and sand. Can anybody tell me if 18” rims have been fitted to the HSE so I can see what it’s going to cost me. A serious off roader guy told me the HSE has slightly bigger front brake calipers than the other SE and S, and that if I wanted to go 18” rims I would need to change or modify the front calipers in order to fit the smaller rim. I don’t know if it is true or if I would want to incur cost of different calipers, unless it is an absolute have to have mod. Hopefully somebody has done it or can advise me. The alternate is to just spend the money on additional 19” rim and tyres when/if needed. The challenge is Kaokoland as 19” tyres are obviously not available should I damage two. (I will be taking two spares to Namibia) but still, it would be terrible to be stuck based on serious bad luck and tyre damage. Do I just stick with 19” and deal with it or change to 18” if possible?
Who can share their experience or opinion please?

    I did Kaokoland in a D4 SDV6 with 19" rims with Duratrac 255/55's.

No problems, just a small sidewall cut on one of the tyres, probably down Van Zyl's pass. I did take two spares, but did not even use one.

I kept the tyre pressures fairly high to avoid sidewall cuts, and that seems to have worked.

The high tyre pressures didn't cause problems in the sandy river beds, the D4 handled that well.

I have since then fitted 18" Compomotive rims with 265/65 BFG K02 tyres, so more of a sidewall.

I have been on a few trips with the 18" rims, but I cannot say that it made a huge difference, or that I really needed it, but who really knows ? I still take two spares, but have never had a flat with the BFG's.

I don't know whether the Compomotives will fit on the D4 V8 HSE without brake modifications.

Thanks Jola. I forgot to mention that I have the diesel, not the V8, so perhaps it’s the V8 with the biggest calipers.

Hmm, if you were a bit closer you could bring it over for a test fit.

I suspect that your vehicle has the same calipers as my D4, it is the V8 that has the larger brakes.

We are also planning a trip to Kokoaland towards the end of 2021... So far we have 2 x defender 110 TDI's, 1 x Toyota Land Cruiser and my Disco 3 V8 going..

I also have the 19" wheels with the Goodyear Wrangler 255/55R19 tyres fitted.... I have done a couple of 4x4 routes with these tyres and they have been great so far... I normally run at 2.5 bar on the highway and have dropped them down to 1.9 -2.0 bar for sand and rock driving.. have had no issues... the terrain response system on these vehicles is incredible.

I saw that there is now a 255 or 265/65R19 4x4 tyre available... I saw it on a UK site and can't remember the brand of tyre... this should be much better for sand driving...

I was also contemplating switching to the Disco 3 18" Rims fitted with 265/60 or 265/65R18 rubber.

if I do go with the 19" rim /tyre option I will probably travel with 2 x 19" rims and tyres for just incase... I will stick them on my roof rack...

    My 2nd spare is on a D3 18" rim.

It only fits on the back wheels, so I may have to swap wheels if my second flat is on one of the front wheels.

That makes sense. I have spare tyres. I think I will still try to have a second spare rim. If I can buy one the same as I have currently.

Peter on the forum ,a LR specialist did the caliper conversion on his D4 diesel to fit the 18 rims . I did a lift ( Disco rods ) on my D3 and my next set of tires will be 18 x 70
