Try some spirits of salts. Totally attacks rust.

Agree. You can use vinegar as well. Maybe try and build a little "dam" around the vin and then soak it with vinegar or spirits of salts then lightly brush afterwards. The acid eats the rust and you will be left with clean gray metal

If you ask the hardware store for hydrochloric acid, they will say sorry, we don't stock that.
Spirits of Salts, he will give you a bottle immediately.

Pool acid is hydrochloric acid or Spirit of Salts as Henris and those in Nigel call it.

Use Q12 rust remover ,readily available in the hardware store or phosphoric acid ,way better than pool acid

Brasso/Acetone/etc etc etc, lots of stuff can remove that rust

Be VERY careful not to try sand it or scratch it with a wire brush etc etc.........if you do a SAPS Clearance they will ask questions.

A piece of white chalk should also reveal everything.

Just out of interest, do you have the papers? If so, you should not have any problem restamping the numbers on elsewhere. I had a Landy where the chassis number was completely rusted off, and had back up docs referring to the vehicle, like, engine number, service books and the original invoice (R5775.00), and it was no problem.

If you don't have the papers, it's near impossible to register it anyway without the last registered owners proof of sale to you. I have also managed to do this, but only with assistance of a local person that specialises in the re-registration of vintage cars.

Use Coca-cola. Well known to remove rust because of phosphoric acid content. Also plenty of youtube videos illustrating it.

    Good Day,
Yes i do have papers, i went to the testing station and they referred me to area 13 in Pretoria west where they said the bakkie will have to get new numbers, i assume police numbers which will be akin to a stolen/recovered car.
Please send me details of the person you used to re-stamp your landy, i'm still gathering all the information i can to avoid it stamped with police numbers

Put some phosphoric acid on and then rinse with water.
Phosphoric acid is easiest to buy as Q12.
